Il primo tentativo \u00e8 stato effettuato nell'agosto del 2024, ma ha incontrato difficolt\u00e0, nonostante il consenso degli sviluppatori del kernel per procedere alla pulizia nel 2025 o 2026 dopo la formazione delle rispettive ramificazioni LTS del kernel. Nel secondo set di patch, Arnd ha aggiornato le informazioni e ha aggiunto nei file di configurazione avvertimenti sulla classificazione delle piattaforme come obsolete. Viene effettivamente proposto di rimuovere le piattaforme contrassegnate nel kernel 7.4, atteso all'inizio del 2027.    <\/p>\n<p>Sono previste per la rimozione:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Tutti i file di supporto per le schede, non migrati all'utilizzo della struttura Device Tree. Far\u00e0 eccezione solo per le piattaforme OMAP1 e S3C (ARCH_S3C64XX), poich\u00e9 il codice per il supporto di OMAP1 \u00e8 in fase di migrazione a Device Tree, mentre le schede S3C vengono ancora utilizzate attivamente. Tra l'altro, sar\u00e0 disabilitato di default il supporto per la struttura ATAGS (ARM Tag-Area), precedentemente utilizzata per trasferire informazioni di configurazione prima di Device Tree.\n<li class=\"l\"> Supporto per il set esteso di istruzioni iWMMXt, dichiarato obsoleto a partire da GCC 14.\n<li class=\"l\"> Architettura ARMv6\/ARM1136r0, utilizzata in SoC come ARM1136r0p (NXP i.MX31) e OMAP24xx (Nokia N8xx). La rimozione non coinvolge l'architettura ARMv6K (ARM1136r1\/ARM1176).\n<li class=\"l\"> I microcontrollori basati su processori Cortex-M3\/M4\/M7 (stm32, imxrt, lpc18xx, samv7) sono gli ultimi chip supportati nel kernel senza un'unit\u00e0 di gestione della memoria (MMU).\n<li class=\"l\"> RiscPC \u00e8 la piattaforma pi\u00f9 antica supportata nel kernel.\n<li class=\"l\"> Piattaforme LSI Axxia.\n<li class=\"l\"> Emulatore per eseguire operazioni con la virgola mobile NWFPE (No Floating Point Emulator), OABI e modalit\u00e0 di compatibilit\u00e0 con OABI (OABI_COMPAT), che consente di eseguire file eseguibili compilati per OABI, utilizzando un kernel con EABI. Queste sottosistemi sono utilizzate solo su dispositivi con processori StrongARM basati sull'architettura ARMv4 e saranno rimosse rimanendo nel kernel fino alla rimozione del supporto per StrongARM.\n<li class=\"l\"> Struttura param_struct, utilizzata prima degli ATAGS (ARM Tag-Area), dichiarata obsoleta nel 2001 e prevista per la rimozione gi\u00e0 nel 2006.\n<li class=\"l\"> Contrassegnato come obsoleto e non funzionante (broken) supporto della modalit\u00e0 BE8 (big-endian ARMv7), che per ora non si prevede di rimuovere, poich\u00e9 rappresenta un interesse per il test dei componenti dello spazio utente su sistemi big-endian. Il supporto per la variante big-endian di ARMv5 \u00e8 mantenuto, poich\u00e9 \u00e8 utilizzato nei processori ixp4xx, attualmente in uso.    <\/ul>\n<p>Inoltre, nel kernel Linux 7.3 si prevede di rimuovere il file system EFS, che \u00e8 stato utilizzato nelle prime versioni del sistema operativo IRIX, non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 in uso da circa 30 anni e non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 supportato da oltre 20 anni. Per coloro che necessitano di accesso alle informazioni sulle partizioni con EFS, esistono utilit\u00e0 che operano nello spazio utente.    <\/p>\n<p>Sono inoltre iniziati i lavori per interrompere l'uso nell kernel dell'interfaccia a 32 bit rdmsr() per accedere ai registri MSR (Model Specific Register) nella CPU, che consente di leggere separatamente il contenuto dei valori a 32 bit superiori e inferiori dai registri MSR a 64 bit. Si prevede di rimuovere completamente il codice dell'interfaccia a 32 bit e di passare il kernel all'interfaccia a 64 bit rdmsrq(), il che consentir\u00e0 di sostituire tutti i macro ad alto livello
