Nel codice sorgente di FreeBSD-CURRENT, su cui si basa il ramo di FreeBSD 16, \u00e8 stata introdotta una modifica che rimuove dall'installazione di base gli ultimi componenti rimasti distribuiti sotto licenza GPL \u2014 gli strumenti diff3 e dialog. Il programma diff3 \u00e8 stato sostituito con un equivalente del progetto OpenBSD, distribuito sotto licenza BSD, mentre per sostituire dialog \u00e8 stata sviluppata appositamente per FreeBSD l'utilit\u00e0 bsddialog. L'installer \u00e8 stato migrato a bsddialog quattro anni fa e l'ultimo programma legato a GNU dialog era l'utilit\u00e0 dpv, che \u00e8 stata dichiarata obsoleta oltre due anni fa ed ora rimossa insieme a GNU dialog. Il rilascio di FreeBSD 16, previsto per dicembre 2027, sar\u00e0 completamente privo di codice sotto licenza GPL. <\/p>\n
Il principale motivo per il quale FreeBSD si libera dei progetti sotto licenze GPL \u00e8 il passaggio delle utility GNU alla licenza GPLv3, ritenuta inaccettabile per i componenti di base di FreeBSD. Gli sviluppatori di FreeBSD sono stati costretti a rimanere su versioni obsolete delle utility GNU rilasciate prima della transizione a GPLv3.
