L'azienda eMudhra ha pubblicato una dichiarazione riguardo a un incidente che ha portato alla presenza di chiavi private facilmente identificabili per otto certificati radice dell'autorit\u00e0 di certificazione, con solo 1 byte di entropia invece di 48. eMudhra afferma che i certificati sono stati generati nell'aprile 2025 durante una cerimonia pubblica utilizzando moduli di sicurezza hardware HSM (Hardware Security Module), conformi agli standard FIPS 140-2 Livello 3. <\/p>\n

Durante il processo di generazione delle chiavi si \u00e8 verificato un guasto, che ha causato, nella fase di imballaggio\/deimballaggio nell'HSM (wrap\/unwrap, crittografia e decrittografia con la chiave di avvolgimento), la creazione di un secondo insieme di chiavi deboli con byte superiori azzerati, utilizzato nei certificati. Il guasto non \u00e8 stato rilevato, poich\u00e9 le chiavi private vengono generate e memorizzate solo nell'HSM e non vengono divulgate all'esterno in chiaro. La causa del guasto rimane sconosciuta e l'azienda sta conducendo un'indagine correlata. Si afferma che i certificati radice problematici, creati con chiavi deboli, hanno superato un audit indipendente e sono rimasti per due anni nella lista dei certificati attendibili in tutti i repository di certificati radice.
