La differenza nei cambiamenti delle prestazioni da un anno all'altro pu\u00f2 raggiungere fino a 10 volte (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/aircconline.com\/ijcsit\/V9N2\/9217ijcsit14.pdf\">PDF, pg.3<\/a><\/noindex>). Di conseguenza, si crea un collo di bottiglia che impedisce di sfruttare appieno le risorse disponibili e rallenta l'elaborazione dei dati.<\/p>\n<p>Un danno alle prestazioni \u00e8 causato da ci\u00f2 che viene chiamata latenza di decompressione. In alcuni casi, per la preparazione alla decompressione dei dati possono essere necessari fino a 64 cicli di CPU. <\/p>\n<p>A titolo di confronto: l'addizione e la moltiplicazione di numeri in virgola mobile <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/ithare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/part101_infographics_v08.png\">richiedono<\/a><\/noindex> non pi\u00f9 di dieci cicli. Il problema \u00e8 che la memoria funziona con blocchi di dati di dimensioni fisse, mentre le applicazioni operano su oggetti che possono contenere vari tipi di dati e differire tra loro per dimensione. Per risolvere il problema, gli ingegneri del MIT hanno sviluppato una gerarchia di memoria a oggetti che ottimizza l'elaborazione dei dati.<\/p>\n<h2>Come funziona la tecnologia<\/h2>\n<p>\nAlla base della soluzione ci sono tre tecnologie: Hotpads, Zippads e l'algoritmo di compressione COCO.<\/p>\n<p>Hotpads \u00e8 una gerarchia di memoria registri super-veloce gestita tramite software (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scratchpad_memory\">scratchpad<\/a><\/noindex>). Questi registri sono chiamati pads e ce ne sono tre \u2014 da L1 a L3. In essi sono memorizzati oggetti di diverse dimensioni, metadati e array di puntatori.<\/p>\n<p>In sostanza, l'architettura rappresenta un sistema di cache, ma progettato per lavorare con oggetti. Il livello del pad in cui si trova un oggetto dipende da quanto spesso viene utilizzato. Se uno dei livelli \"si riempie\", il sistema avvia un meccanismo simile ai \"garbage collector\" nei linguaggi Java o Go. Questo analizza quali oggetti vengono utilizzati meno frequentemente e li sposta automaticamente tra i livelli.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Zippads funziona su Hotpads \u2014 archivia e dearchivia i dati in entrata o in uscita dai due ultimi livelli gerarchici \u2014 il pad L3 e la memoria principale. Nei primi due pad, i dati sono conservati inalterati.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\n <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Come funziona la compressione nell&#039;architettura della memoria orientata agli oggetti\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/3a4ee154cc1db4c9c5a30c668a6f9eff.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nZippads comprime oggetti di dimensioni inferiori a 128 byte. Gli oggetti pi\u00f9 grandi vengono suddivisi in parti, che vengono poi collocate in diverse aree di memoria. Come affermano gli sviluppatori, questo approccio aumenta il coefficiente di utilizzo efficiente della memoria.<\/p>\n<p>Per comprimere gli oggetti viene utilizzato l'algoritmo COCO (Cross-Object COmpression), di cui parleremo in seguito, sebbene il sistema sia capace di lavorare anche con <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/users.ece.cmu.edu\/~omutlu\/pub\/bdi-compression_pact12.pdf\">Base-Delta-Immediate<\/a><\/noindex> o <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/4589203\">FPC<\/a><\/noindex>. L'algoritmo COCO \u00e8 una forma di compressione differenziale (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_differencing\">differential compression<\/a><\/noindex>). Confronta gli oggetti con quelli \"di base\" e rimuove i bit ripetuti \u2014 vedere lo schema qui sotto:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Come funziona la compressione nell&#039;architettura della memoria orientata agli oggetti\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/46907c8eac74b6af0a1b3985da9a899b.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Secondo gli ingegneri del MIT, la loro gerarchia di memoria orientata agli oggetti \u00e8 pi\u00f9 efficiente del 17% rispetto agli approcci classici. \u00c8 molto pi\u00f9 vicina nella sua struttura all'architettura delle moderne applicazioni, quindi il nuovo metodo ha un grande potenziale.<\/p>\n<p>Si prevede che la tecnologia venga adottata principalmente da aziende che operano con grandi quantit\u00e0 di dati e algoritmi di machine learning. Un'altra possibile direzione sono le piattaforme cloud.
