Distribuzione Gentoo Linux<\/a><\/noindex> ha compiuto 20 anni. Il 4 ottobre 1999, Daniel Robbins ha registrato il dominio gentoo.org e ho iniziato<\/a><\/noindex> Sviluppo di una nuova distribuzione, in cui insieme a Bob Mutch si \u00e8 cercato di trasferire alcune idee dal progetto FreeBSD, unendole con una distribuzione Linux Enoch gi\u00e0 in fase di sviluppo da circa un anno, nella quale si sono condotti esperimenti per la creazione di una distribuzione compilata a partire dai sorgenti con ottimizzazioni per hardware specifico. Una caratteristica fondamentale di Gentoo \u00e8 stata la divisione tra i porti compilati dai sorgenti (portage) e il sistema base minimo necessario per compilare le applicazioni principali della distribuzione. Il primo rilascio stabile di Gentoo \u00e8 avvenuto dopo tre anni \u2014 il 31 marzo 2002.<\/p>\n

Nel 2005, Daniel Robbins ha lasciato il progetto<\/a><\/noindex>, ha trasferito la propriet\u00e0 intellettuale legata a Gentoo all'organizzazione Gentoo Foundation e ha guidato un laboratorio di ricerca sui sistemi aperti in Microsoft (Microsoft Linux and Open Source Lab).
