Il distributore Gentoo Linux ha compiuto 20 anni. Il 4 ottobre 1999 Daniel Robbins ha registrato il dominio gentoo.org e ha avviato lo sviluppo di un nuovo distributore, in cui insieme a Bob Mutch ha cercato di trasferire alcune idee dal progetto FreeBSD, combinandole con il gi\u00e0 esistente distributore Linux Enoch, che aveva gi\u00e0 visto esperimenti per costruire un distributore assemblato dai codici sorgente con ottimizzazioni per hardware specifico. La caratteristica fondamentale di Gentoo \u00e8 stata la divisione tra i porti assemblati dai codici sorgente (portage) e la base minima di sistema necessaria per compilare le principali applicazioni del distributore.
