Il 4 ottobre 1999, Daniel Robbins registr\u00f2 il dominio gentoo.org e inizi\u00f2 lo sviluppo di un nuovo distributore, nel quale, insieme a Bob Mutch, cerc\u00f2 di trasferire alcune idee dal progetto FreeBSD, unendole a un distributore Linux Enoch gi\u00e0 in fase di sviluppo da circa un anno, nel quale venivano condotti esperimenti per costruire un distributore assemblato dai sorgenti con ottimizzazioni per hardware specifico. La caratteristica fondamentale di Gentoo \u00e8 stata la divisione tra i porti assemblati dai sorgenti (portage) e il sistema base minimo necessario per compilare le applicazioni principali del distributore.
