Durante lo sviluppo, parte del codice \u00e8 stata presa dalla libreria <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceware.org\/newlib\/\">newlib<\/a><\/noindex> dal progetto Cygwin e <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nongnu.org\/avr-libc\/\">AVR Libc<\/a><\/noindex>, sviluppata per microcontrollori Atmel AVR. Il codice di PicoLibc <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/keith-packard\/picolibc\">\u00e8 distribuito<\/a><\/noindex> \u00e8 sotto licenza BSD. \u00c8 supportata la compilazione della libreria per architetture ARM (32-bit), i386, RISC-V, x86_64 e PowerPC.<\/p>\n<p>Keith Packard ha iniziato lo sviluppo dopo non essere riuscito a trovare una versione adeguata di Libc da utilizzare su dispositivi embedded con poca RAM. Il progetto \u00e8 in fase di sviluppo dall'anno scorso. Nella sua prima fase, il progetto consisteva in una variante di newlib, in cui le funzioni stdio erano state sostituite con una versione compatta di avrlibc (stdio in newlib non era soddisfacente per il suo alto consumo di risorse). Poich\u00e9 l'attivit\u00e0 attuale di Keith \u00e8 strettamente legata al lavoro con l'architettura RISC-V e allo sviluppo di strumenti per dispositivi embedded, di recente ha esaminato lo stato delle implementazioni di libc e ha concluso che con alcune modifiche la combinazione di newlib e avrlibc potrebbe diventare una buona soluzione universale. Il progetto era originariamente sviluppato con il nome di \u00abnewlib-nano\u00bb, ma per evitare confusione con la libreria Newlib \u00e8 stato rinominato in PicoLibc.<\/p>\n<p>Nella sua attuale configurazione, Picolibc ha gi\u00e0 eliminato tutto il codice non distribuito sotto licenza BSD (questo codice non \u00e8 stato utilizzato nella compilazione per dispositivi embedded), semplificando notevolmente la questione della licenza del progetto. L'implementazione dei thread locali \u00e8 stata convertita da 'struct _reent' al meccanismo TLS (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thread-local_storage\">thread-local storage<\/a><\/noindex>). \u00c8 attivata per impostazione predefinita una versione compatta di stdio, derivata dal codice della libreria avrlibc (le inserzioni assembler specifiche per ATmel sono state riscritte in C). Per la compilazione \u00e8 stato utilizzato lo strumento Meson, permettendo di non dipendere dagli script di compilazione di newlib e semplificando il porting delle modifiche da newlib. \u00c8 stata aggiunta una versione semplificata del codice di inizializzazione (crt0), allegata al file eseguibile e eseguita prima di passare il controllo alla funzione main().<\/p>\n<p>Nella versione Picolibc 1.1:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> \u00c8 stata aggiunta una libreria di supporto per la tecnologia \u00ab<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.keil.com\/support\/man\/docs\/armcc\/armcc_pge1358787046598.htm\">semihosting<\/a><\/noindex>\u00bb, che consente al codice eseguito in un ambiente di debug o emulatore di utilizzare i meccanismi di input\/output del sistema host;\n<li class=\"l\"> Per i sistemi che supportano le chiamate di sistema open, close, read e write, sono stati aggiunti interfacce standardizzate POSIX di input\/output stdio in tinystdio, comprese le funzioni fopen e fdopen, oltre al binding di stdin\/stdout\/stderr a specifici descrittori di file definiti in POSIX;\n<li class=\"l\"> Sono state trasferite recenti modifiche dalla base di codice di newlib. Inclusi stub libm per <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/man7.org\/linux\/man-pages\/man3\/fenv.3.html\">fenv.h<\/a><\/noindex>, che possono essere utilizzati su sistemi senza supporto per i calcoli in virgola mobile;\n<li class=\"l\"> \u00c8 stato aggiunto un esempio di costruzione di un'applicazione \u00abHello world\u00bb con picolibc per sistemi ARM e RISC-V;\n<li class=\"l\"> Sono
