Il CTO di AMD afferma che l'azienda non ha espresso alcuna intenzione di implementare il supporto per quattro thread per core nei futuri processori. L'idea di SMT4 non \u00e8 affatto prematura: molto in questo campo dipende dalla disponibilit\u00e0 di software in grado di sfruttare i vantaggi del multitasking in tale configurazione. IBM, ad esempio, offre da tempo processori server con supporto per un numero cos\u00ec elevato di thread per core.<\/p>\n

In un'intervista a Tom\u2019s Hardware<\/a><\/noindex> il CTO di AMD Mark Papermaster ha risposto alla domanda sulla possibilit\u00e0 di implementare il supporto per quattro thread per core nel segmento desktop e ha iniziato il suo commento affermando che al momento non ci sono impegni ufficiali. Si vociferava che AMD avesse intenzione di implementare il supporto SMT4 nei processori server Milan con architettura Zen 3, ma le presentazioni ufficiali pubblicate successivamente hanno smentito tali informazioni.<\/p>\n

Mark Peipermaister ha cercato di discutere il tema SMT4 in modo il pi\u00f9 astratto possibile, sottolineando la volont\u00e0 di non associare questa idea con i piani attuali dell'azienda. In base a queste condizioni, ha valutato questa funzione dei processori in modo piuttosto obiettivo. Secondo lui, nel segmento desktop alcuni utenti stanno persino disattivando l'iperthreading dei core. Alcune applicazioni beneficiano di tale funzione, altre no. La concezione stessa del trattamento di quattro flussi da un singolo core non \u00e8 nuova, ed \u00e8 stata a lungo utilizzata nel segmento dei server. Mark ha persino citato l'esistenza di soluzioni hardware con supporto per SMT4, accennando delicatamente ai processori IBM Power, che hanno acquisito questa capacit\u00e0 all'inizio di questo decennio. In sostanza, come sostiene Mark, la giustificazione dell'implementazione di SMT4 \u00e8 determinata solo dalla presenza di una massa critica di applicazioni che possono lavorare efficacemente con essa in un segment specifico del mercato.<\/p>\n
