Sebbene l'FBI non riveli dettagli sul programma IDLE, i giornalisti sono venuti a conoscenza del fatto che la sua essenza consiste nell'unire informazioni aziendali reali con dati falsi che sembrano piuttosto credibili. Gli hacker non possono semplicemente scaricare grandi volumi di dati, contando sul fatto che siano tutti importanti e utili. Pertanto, i casi di download di blocchi di informazioni falsi possono dare un segnale al personale IT delle aziende che i malintenzionati hanno effettuato un attacco ai sistemi informatici.
