Nel peggior scenario, l'uso di ZFS su questi dischi problematici potrebbe portare a una perdita di dati. <\/p>\n<p>I problemi si verificano con i dischi WD Red da 2 a 6 TB, prodotti dal 2018, che utilizzano per la registrazione la tecnologia <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.westerndigital.com\/wd-red-nas-drives\/\">DM-SMR<\/a><\/noindex> (Device-Managed Shingled Magnetic Recording) e <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.westerndigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020_04_22_WD_SMR_SKUs_1Slide.pdf\">sono contrassegnati<\/a><\/noindex> con l'etichetta EFAX (per i dischi CMR viene utilizzato l'identificativo EFRX). Western Digital <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.westerndigital.com\/wd-red-nas-drives\/\">ha celebrato<\/a><\/noindex> nel suo blog afferma che gli hard disk SMR WD Red sono progettati per essere utilizzati in NAS per uso domestico e piccole imprese, dove vengono installati al massimo 8 dischi e si verifica un carico di circa 180 TB all'anno, caratteristico per il backup e lo scambio di file. La precedente generazione di dischi WD Red e i modelli WD Red da 8 TB, cos\u00ec come i dischi delle serie WD Red Pro, WD Gold e WD Ultrastar, continuano a essere prodotti con tecnologia CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) e il loro utilizzo non presenta problemi con ZFS.<\/p>\n<p>La tecnologia SMR si basa sull'uso di dischi a testina magnetica la cui larghezza \u00e8 maggiore rispetto a quella delle tracce. Questo porta a una scrittura con parziale sovrapposizione delle tracce adiacenti, il che significa che qualsiasi riscrittura richiede la riscrittura dell'intero gruppo di tracce. Per ottimizzare l'operativit\u00e0 con tali dispositivi di memorizzazione, si utilizza <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zonedstorage.io\/\">la zonazione<\/a><\/noindex> \u2014 lo spazio di archiviazione \u00e8 suddiviso in zone, che costituiscono gruppi di blocchi o settori nei quali \u00e8 consentito solo l'aggiunta sequenziale di dati con l'aggiornamento dell'intero gruppo di blocchi. In generale, i dischi SMR hanno una maggiore efficienza in termini di consumo energetico, sono pi\u00f9 accessibili economicamente e mostrano un miglioramento delle prestazioni durante la scrittura sequenziale dei dati, ma sono pi\u00f9 lenti durante le operazioni di scrittura casuale, comprese operazioni come la ricostruzione degli array di archiviazione. <\/p>\n<p>DM-SMR implica che le operazioni di zonizzazione e distribuzione dei dati siano gestite dal controller del disco, e per il sistema, un tale disco appare come un classico disco rigido, senza necessitare di manovre separate. In DM-SMR viene utilizzata l'indirizzamento logico indiretto dei blocchi (LBA, Logical Block Addressing), simile all'indirizzamento logico negli SSD. Dopo ogni operazione di scrittura casuale \u00e8 necessaria un'operazione di background di raccolta dei rifiuti, che porta a fluttuazioni imprevedibili nelle prestazioni. Il sistema pu\u00f2 cercare di applicare ottimizzazioni a tali dischi, supponendo che i dati verranno scritti nel settore specificato, ma le informazioni fornite dal controller determinano solo la struttura logica e, in realt\u00e0, durante la distribuzione dei dati, il controller applicher\u00e0 i suoi algoritmi, tenendo conto dei dati precedentemente posizionati. Pertanto, prima di utilizzare dischi DM-SMR in un pool ZFS, si consiglia di eseguire un'operazione di reset riportandoli allo stato originale.<\/p>\n<p>Per analizzare le condizioni in cui si verificano problematiche, \u00e8 stata coinvolta l'azienda Western Digital, che insieme a iXsystems cerca di trovare una soluzione e di preparare un aggiornamento del firmware. Prima della pubblicazione delle conclusioni riguardo la risoluzione dei problemi, \u00e8 previsto di testare i dischi con il nuovo firmware su sistemi di archiviazione ad alta domanda con FreeNAS 11.3 e TrueNAS CORE 12.0. Si afferma che, a causa di diverse interpretazioni dell'SMR da parte di vari produttori, su alcuni tipi di dischi SMR non si riscontrano problemi con ZFS; tuttavia, i test condotti da iXsystems si concentrano esclusivamente sulla verifica dei dischi WD Red basati sulla tecnologia DM-SMR, mentre per i dischi SMR <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ixsystems.com\/community\/resources\/list-of-known-smr-drives.141\/\">di altri produttori<\/a><\/noindex> \u00e8 necessaria un'ulteriore ricerca.<\/p>\n<p>Attualmente, i problemi con ZFS sono stati dimostrati e replicati nei test per almeno i dischi WD Red 4TB WD40EFAX con firmware 82.00A82 e <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blocksandfiles.com\/2020\/04\/15\/shingled-drives-have-non-shingled-zones-for-caching-writes\/\">si manifestano<\/a><\/noindex> con un passaggio allo stato di guasto sotto un carico di scrittura elevato, ad esempio, durante la ricostruzione dello storage dopo l'aggiunta di un nuovo disco all'array (resilvering). Si presume che il problema si manifesti anche su altri modelli di WD Red con lo stesso firmware. Quando si verifica il problema, il disco inizia a restituire il codice di errore IDNF (Sector ID Not Found) e diventa inutilizzabile, il che viene gestito in ZFS come un guasto del disco e pu\u00f2 portare alla perdita dei dati memorizzati sul disco.
