Safe-Linking non blocca completamente la possibilit\u00e0 di sfruttare le vulnerabilit\u00e0, ma aumenta notevolmente la difficolt\u00e0 di realizzare alcune categorie di exploit con costi minimi, poich\u00e9 oltre a un overflow del buffer sfruttato \u00e8 necessario trovare un'altra vulnerabilit\u00e0 che provocchi una fuga di informazioni sulla posizione dell'heap in memoria.<\/p>\n<p>Le patch con implementazione di Safe-Linking sono state preparate per Glibc (ptmalloc), uClibc-NG (dlmalloc), gperftools (tcmalloc) e Google TCMalloc, e sono state proposte per l'aggiornamento della protezione in Chromium (in<br \/>\nChromium dal 2012 \u00e8 gi\u00e0 incorporata una tecnica di protezione MaskPtr mirata alla stessa problematica, ma la soluzione di Checkpoint dimostra prestazioni superiori).<br \/>\nLe patch proposte sono gi\u00e0 state approvate per essere incluse nel rilascio di agosto <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sourceware.org\/git\/?p=glibc.git;a=commitdiff;h=a1a486d70ebcc47a686ff5846875eacad0940e41\">Glibc 3.32<\/a><\/noindex> e l'implementazione di Safe-Linking sar\u00e0 inclusa di default. In uClibc-NG, il supporto per Safe-Linking <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/gogs.waldemar-brodkorb.de\/oss\/uclibc-ng\/commit\/886878b22424d6f95bcdeee55ada72049d21547c\">\u00e8 entrato<\/a><\/noindex> \u00e8 parte della versione 1.0.33 e sar\u00e0 incluso di default. In gperftools (vecchio tcmalloc) le modifiche <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/gperftools\/gperftools\/pull\/1161\">accettati<\/a><\/noindex>, ma saranno proposti in una delle prossime versioni come opzione. <\/p>\n<p>Gli sviluppatori <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=52364\">TCMalloc<\/a><\/noindex> (nuovo tcmalloc) hanno rifiutato di essere accettati <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/tcmalloc\/pull\/19\">cambia<\/a><\/noindex>, facendo riferimento a una forte diminuzione delle prestazioni e alla necessit\u00e0 di aggiungere test avanzati per controllare regolarmente che tutto funzioni correttamente. I test condotti dagli ingegneri di Checkpoint hanno mostrato che il metodo Safe-Linking non comporta un'ulteriore spesa di memoria, e che le prestazioni durante le operazioni con la heap diminuiscono in media solo dello 0,02%, e nel peggior caso dell'1,5% (per confronto, il sovraccarico nel metodo utilizzato in Chromium \u00e8 stimato come \u00abinferiore al 2%\u00bb). L'inclusione<br \/>\nSafe-Linking porta all'esecuzione di 2-3 istruzioni assembler aggiuntive ad ogni chiamata di free() e 3-4 istruzioni ad ogni chiamata di malloc(). Il metodo \u00e8 molto semplice da implementare e richiede solo l'aggiunta di un macro e il suo utilizzo sui puntatori al prossimo blocco nel codice (ad esempio, per Glibc <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sourceware.org\/git\/?p=glibc.git;a=commitdiff;h=a1a486d70ebcc47a686ff5846875eacad0940e41\">cambia<\/a><\/noindex> solo poche righe di codice). Prima di applicare il valore del puntatore al successivo elemento nella lista, viene eseguita una trasformazione tramite maschera e un controllo dell'allineamento secondo il confine della pagina di memoria. Il puntatore \u00e8 sostituito dal risultato dell'operazione \u00ab(L &gt;&gt; PAGE_SHIFT) XOR (P)\u00bb, dove P \u00e8 il valore del puntatore, e L \u00e8 la posizione in memoria in cui \u00e8 memorizzato questo puntatore.<br \/>\n<center><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/research.checkpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/libc_figure_6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Checkpoint ha proposto una tecnica di protezione chiamata Safe-Linking, che rende pi\u00f9 difficile sfruttare le vulnerabilit\u00e0.\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/22c4269fefca9d21bc7d437af8a739f9.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Quando utilizzato nel sistema <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ASLR\">ASLR<\/a><\/noindex> (Address Space Layout Randomization) parte dei bit L con l'indirizzo di base dell'heap contiene valori casuali, che vengono utilizzati come chiave per la codifica di P (estratti tramite un'operazione di shift di 12 bit per pagine da 4096 byte). Questa manovra riduce il rischio di cattura del puntatore in un exploit, poich\u00e9 il puntatore non \u00e8 conservato nella sua forma originale e per sostituirlo \u00e8 necessario conoscere la posizione dell'heap. Inoltre, nel codice della patch \u00e8 presente anche un controllo di allineamento del blocco, che impedisce all'attaccante di sostituire il puntatore con un valore non allineato e richiede la conoscenza del numero di bit utilizzati per l'allineamento, il che su sistemi a 64 bit consente di bloccare 15 tentativi su 16 di attacco, non considerando l'allineamento.<\/p>\n<p>Il metodo \u00e8 efficace per proteggere da attacchi che utilizzano la parziale sovrascrittura dei puntatori (modifica dei byte inferiori), la completa riscrittura dei puntatori (reindirizzamento al codice dell'attaccante) e il cambio di posizione della lista a un indirizzo non allineato.
