Il driver \u00e8 compatibile con tutti i modelli di schede Raspberry Pi rilasciati prima dell'uscita di Raspberry Pi 4, \u2014 da 'Zero' e '1 Model A' a '3 Model B+' e 'Compute Module 3+'. Il driver \u00e8 stato sviluppato da Martin Thomas (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0martint\">Martin Thomas<\/a><\/noindex>), ingegnere di NVIDIA, tuttavia, lo sviluppo \u00e8 avvenuto come progetto personale, non correlato a NVIDIA (il driver \u00e8 stato sviluppato negli ultimi due anni nel tempo libero). Il codice <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Yours3lf\/rpi-vk-driver\">distribuito<\/a><\/noindex> sotto licenza MIT.<\/p>\n<p>Poich\u00e9 le capacit\u00e0 della GPU VideoCore IV, presenti nei modelli pi\u00f9 vecchi di Raspberry Pi, non sono sufficienti per implementare completamente Vulkan, il driver implementa solo un sottoinsieme dell'API Vulkan, che non copre l'intero standard, ma cerca di seguirlo nel limite delle possibilit\u00e0 dell'hardware. Tuttavia, le funzionalit\u00e0 disponibili sono sufficienti per molte applicazioni e giochi, e le prestazioni superano notevolmente quelle dei driver OpenGL, grazie a una gestione della memoria pi\u00f9 efficiente, all'elaborazione multi-threaded delle istruzioni GPU e al controllo diretto delle operazioni della GPU. Il driver supporta anche funzionalit\u00e0 come MSAA (Multisample anti-aliasing), shader a basso livello e contatori di prestazioni. Tra le limitazioni si segnala l'assenza di supporto per shader GLSL, che non sono ancora disponibili in questa fase di sviluppo.<\/p>\n<p>Dallo stesso autore <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Yours3lf\/vkQuake3\/releases\/tag\/v1.0\">pubblicato<\/a><\/noindex> porting del gioco Quake 3 per Raspberry Pi, che funge da dimostrazione delle capacit\u00e0 del nuovo driver. Il gioco si basa sul motore ioQuake3, a cui \u00e8 stato aggiunto un backend di rendering modulare basato su Vulkan, sviluppato inizialmente dal progetto <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/kennyalive\/Quake-III-Arena-Kenny-Edition\">Quake III Arena Kenny Edition<\/a><\/noindex>. Con l'uso del nuovo driver nel gioco <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0martint\/status\/1274012749174013954\">si \u00e8 riusciti a raggiungere<\/a><\/noindex> rendering pi\u00f9 di 100 fotogrammi al secondo (FPS) sulla scheda Raspberry Pi 3B+ con risoluzione 720p.<\/p>\n<p>Ricordiamo che l'organizzazione Raspberry Pi Foundation, insieme all'azienda Igalia <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=52304\">sta<\/a><\/noindex> sta sviluppando il proprio driver Vulkan, attualmente in fase iniziale e previsto per il lancio di alcune applicazioni reali nella seconda met\u00e0 del 2020. Questo driver supporta solo il processore grafico VideoCore VI, utilizzato a partire dal modello Raspberry Pi 4, e non \u00e8 compatibile con le schede pi\u00f9 vecchie. Rispetto a OpenGL, l'uso di Vulkan consente di ottenere <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/abishekmuthian.com\/getting-smoother-desktop-experience-on-raspberry-pi\/\">un aumento delle
