\u00c8 stata rilasciata la prima versione stabile della distribuzione AlmaLinux, creata in risposta alla chiusura anticipata del supporto per CentOS 8 da parte di Red Hat (\u00e8 stato deciso di interrompere il rilascio degli aggiornamenti per CentOS 8 alla fine del 2021, e non nel 2029 come previsto dagli utenti). Il progetto \u00e8 fondato da CloudLinux, che ha fornito risorse e sviluppatori, ed \u00e8 passato sotto l'ala di un'organizzazione no-profit separata, AlmaLinux OS Foundation, per lo sviluppo in un ambiente neutrale con il coinvolgimento della community. \u00c8 stato stanziato un milione di dollari all'anno per lo sviluppo del progetto. <\/p>\n

Le build sono state preparate per l'architettura x86_64 in forma di immagine di avvio (650 MB), minima (1,8 GB) e completa (9 GB). A breve sono previste anche pubblicazioni di build per l'architettura ARM. Il rilascio \u00e8 stato creato sulla base della versione di Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3 ed \u00e8 completamente identico a essa in termini di funzionalit\u00e0, ad eccezione delle modifiche legate al rebranding e alla rimozione di pacchetti specifici per RHEL, come redhat-*, insights-client e subscription-manager-migration*. Tutti gli sviluppi sono pubblicati sotto licenze libere. <\/p>\n

La distribuzione si sviluppa secondo i principi del classico CentOS, formandosi attraverso la ricompilazione della base pacchetti di Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 e mantiene la completa compatibilit\u00e0 binaria con RHEL, il che consente di utilizzarla come sostituzione trasparente del classico CentOS 8. Gli aggiornamenti per la linea della distribuzione AlmaLinux, basata sulla base pacchetti di RHEL 8, sono promessi fino al 2029. Per migrare le installazioni esistenti di CentOS 8 su AlmaLinux \u00e8 sufficiente scaricare e avviare un apposito script. <\/p>\n

In alternativa al vecchio CentOS, oltre ad AlmaLinux, si posizionano anche Rocky Linux (le build di test sono promesse per il 31 marzo) e Oracle Linux (legato agli interessi della corporazione). Inoltre, Red Hat ha fornito la possibilit\u00e0 di utilizzare gratuitamente RHEL nelle organizzazioni che sviluppano software open source e negli ambienti di singoli sviluppatori, che possono contare fino a 16 sistemi virtuali o fisici.
