Nieuw model voor MySQL-beheer, gericht op de betrokkenheid van de gemeenschap bij ontwikkeling

Heather VanCura, vice-president of Oracle responsible for community engagement, introduced the second phase of the initiative to strengthen community connections and accelerate MySQL development. While the first phase focused on improving transparency in processes and getting the community involved in the roadmap for MySQL, the second phase will concentrate on involving community representatives in development. Among the goals mentioned are speeding up innovation, providing clear pathways for submitting changes, and expanding the MySQL ecosystem.

To implement this intention, a Steering Committee has been established, which will include representatives from the community, determine the development strategy for MySQL, and serve as a link to the MySQL ecosystem. The initial committee will include not only Oracle employees but also representatives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud.

The committee will address issues related to prioritizing long-term development, expanding the ecosystem, modernizing project management, involving the community in development, and receiving feedback from the community. However, the committee does not replace technical leadership and will not interfere in daily development processes.

To engage community representatives, a new management model has been proposed with the following roles defined:

  • Contributors write code, test, review, document, and participate in technical discussions. A contributor can be a community representative, not just an Oracle employee.
  • Committers review changes and monitor code quality. Initially, the committers team will consist of Oracle employees, but in the future, the committer role may be granted to proven contributors from the community.
  • Project leads are responsible for making technical decisions and planning development in specific areas such as toolkits, optimizers, runtime, InnoDB, etc.
  • Core Project lead is responsible for the MySQL Community Edition product.
  • The Vulnerability Group is responsible for analyzing vulnerability reports, coordinating vulnerability fixes, and disclosing security issues.
