During the experiment, researchers successfully demonstrated the recovery of 224- and 256-bit ECDSA keys from a hardware-isolated key storage used in the Nexus 5X smartphone. The recovery of the key required the generation of about 12,000 digital signatures, which took over 14 hours. An attack toolkit was used. Cachegrab.

The main cause of the problem is the sharing of common hardware components and cache for computations in TrustZone and the main system—isolation is performed at the logical separation level but using shared computing blocks, leading to traces of computations and information about branch addresses being stored in the common processor cache. Using the Prime+Probe method, which is based on assessing changes in access times to cached information, it is possible to track data flows and signs of executing code related to digital signature computations in TrustZone with quite high accuracy by checking for specific patterns in the cache.

Most of the time spent forming a digital signature using ECDSA keys in Qualcomm chips is dedicated to performing multiplication operations in a loop using an unchanged initialization vector for each signature (nonce). If an attacker can recover even a few bits of information about this vector, it opens up the possibility for an attack to sequentially recover the entire private key.

In the case of Qualcomm, two leakage points for such information were identified in the multiplication algorithm: during table lookup operations and in the conditional data extraction code based on the value of the last bit in the 'nonce' vector. Despite Qualcomm's code containing countermeasures against information leakage through side channels, the devised attack method allows these measures to be circumvented and identifies several bits of the 'nonce' value, which is sufficient to recover 256-bit ECDSA keys.
