Mozilla ontwikkelt zijn eigen systeem voor machinevertaling

Mozilla is working on a project Bergamot to create a machine translation system that operates on the browser side. The project will allow integration of a self-sufficient translation engine into Firefox, which does not rely on external cloud services and processes data solely on the user's system. The main goal of the development is to ensure the confidentiality and protection of user data from potential leaks during the translation of content from web pages opened in the browser.

The development of Bergamot is being carried out in Mozilla's Berlin office with the participation of researchers from several universities in the United Kingdom, Estonia, and the Czech Republic. The development is funded by the European Union under a grant received through the Horizon 2020program. The grant amount is three million euros. The project is set to last for three years. Mozilla geopend has a vacancy for a machine learning systems specialist to participate in the development of the engine for translating from one language to another.

Related developments pertaining to the Bergamot project include the mentioned:

  • framework for machine translation developed at the University of Edinburgh Marian, built on the basis of a recurrent neural network. The framework is written in C++, can utilize GPUs for accelerating training and translation, and wordt geleverd valt onder de MIT-licentie.
  • the toolset created at Charles University Neural Monkey for processing natural language information using sequential machine learning methods. The project employs the TensorFlow framework and can be used for rapid prototyping of machine translation systems and classification of information in natural language. The code is available under the BSD license.
  • The project prepared at the University of Sheffield QuEst++, used for evaluating and predicting the quality of machine translation systems.
  • Developed at Mozilla are the speech synthesizer (TTS) en and speech recognition engine (Deep Speech.)
  • The EU-funded project ParaCrawl, which accumulates a database of synchronous translations of various phrases in different languages that can be used for training machine learning systems.
