Joshua Strobl, the key developer of the Budgie project, has published a proposal to include an atomically updatable variant of Fedora Linux with the Budgie desktop environment, known as Fedora Onyx, as an official build. This variant complements the classic Fedora Budgie Spin and is similar to the Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Sericea, and Fedora Kinoite editions, which come with GNOME, Sway, and KDE. The Fedora Onyx edition is proposed to be included in the upcoming Fedora Linux 39 release, but the proposal has not yet been considered by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of the Fedora distribution development.
Fedora Onyx is based on the technologies of Fedora Silverblue and is also delivered as a single image that is not split into separate packages and is updated atomically by complete replacement. The base environment is built from the official RPM packages of Fedora using the rpm-ostree tool and is mounted in read-only mode. For installing and updating additional applications, the flatpak system of self-contained packages is used, allowing applications to be separated from the main system and run in a separate container.
