In Firefox 68 zal een nieuwe implementatie van de adresbalk worden voorgesteld

In Firefox 68, scheduled for release on July 9, the Awesome Bar will be replaced gepland by a new implementation of the address bar — Quantum Bar. From a user perspective, with a few exceptions, everything remains as before, but the internals have been completely redesigned and the code rewritten, replacing XUL/XBL with standard Web API.

The new implementation significantly simplifies the process of extending functionality (supporting the creation of extensions in the WebExtensions format), removes rigid ties to the browser's subsystems, allows easy integration of new data sources, and provides higher performance and responsiveness of the interface. One notable behavioral change is the requirement to use the Shift+Del or Shift+BackSpace combinations (it used to work without Shift) to delete history entries from the suggestions displayed when typing begins.

In the future, a gradual modernization of the address bar's appearance is expected. Mockups are already available that reflect some ideas for further development. The main changes focus on refining details and improving usability. For instance, it is proposed to increase the size of the address bar during focus, displaying suggestions as input occurs in a block adjusted to this size, rather than using the full width of the screen.In the suggested results displayed as typing progresses, the text not entered by the user will be highlighted, rather than the proposed part of the search query. Firefox will also remember the state of the address bar when typing and restore it after shifting focus away from the address bar (for example, the list of recommendations used to disappear after temporarily switching to another tab, but now it will be restored upon return). Pop-up explanations for the icons of additional search engines are also proposed.

For the future, several experiments are also planned to assess the feasibility of implementing some new ideas:

Displaying the 8 most popular sites from the Activity Stream when the address bar is activated (before typing begins);

• Replacing search toggle buttons with shortcuts to open the search engine;
• Removing the separate search bar from the Activity Stream pages and the start screen in private mode;
• Verwijderen van een aparte zoekregel van de Activity Stream-pagina's en het startscherm in de privé-modus.
• Contextuele suggesties voor het gebruik van de adresbalk tonen;
• Specifieke zoekopdrachten voor Firefox onderscheppen om uitleg over de functionaliteit van de browser te geven.
