Dit project ontwikkelt een periodiek gesynchroniseerde fork van de Chromium-browser, uitgebreid met extra patches voor prestatieoptimalisatie, gebruiksgemak en verbeterde beveiliging. Volgens de tests van de ontwikkelaars overtreft Thorium de standaard Chromium met 8-40% in prestaties, voornamelijk door de extra optimalisaties die tijdens het compileren zijn ingeschakeld. De kant-en-klare builds worden gemaakt voor Linux, macOS, Raspberry Pi en Windows.      <\/p>\n<p>Belangrijkste verschillen met Chromium:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Compilatie met ingeschakelde optimalisatie van loops (LLVM Loop), optimalisaties op basis van codeprofileringsresultaten (PGO), optimalisaties tijdens de linkfase (LTO) en het gebruik van processorinstructies SSE4.2, AVX en AES (Chromium gebruikt alleen SSE3).\n<li class=\"l\"> Overdracht van extra functionaliteit naar de codebasis die aanwezig is in Google Chrome, maar niet beschikbaar is in Chromium-builds. Bijvoorbeeld, het Widevine-module voor het afspelen van betaalde beveiligde inhoud (DRM) is toegevoegd, evenals multimediacodecs en de plugins die in Chrome worden gebruikt.\n<li class=\"l\"> Experimentele ondersteuning voor de technologie voor adaptieve streaming van multimedia-inhoud MPEG-DASH is toegevoegd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor het videocodeerformaat HEVC\/H.265 is ingeschakeld voor Linux en Windows.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor afbeeldingen in het JPEG XL-formaat is standaard ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor automatische ondertiteling (Live Caption, SODA) is ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Experimentele ondersteuning voor annotaties in PDF is toegevoegd, maar niet standaard ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Patches voor Chromium die door de Debian-distributie worden geleverd en problemen met lettertypeweergave, VAAPI- en VDPAU-ondersteuning, en Intel HD oplossen, zijn overgebracht, wat zorgt voor integratie met het systeem voor het weergeven van meldingen.\n<li class=\"l\"> VAAPI-ondersteuning is ingeschakeld in omgevingen gebaseerd op Wayland.\n<li class=\"l\"> DoH (DNS over HTTPS) is standaard ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> De functie Do Not Track om trackingcode te blokkeren is standaard ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> De adresbalk toont altijd de volledige URL.\n<li class=\"l\"> Het FLoC-systeem, dat door Google wordt gepromoot in plaats van trackingcookies, is uitgeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Waarschuwingen over Google API-sleutels zijn uitgeschakeld, maar ondersteuning voor API-sleutels voor het synchroniseren van instellingen is behouden.\n<li class=\"l\"> De suggestie om de browser als standaardbrowser te gebruiken, is uitgeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Zoekmachines DuckDuckGo, Brave Search, Ecosia, Ask.com en Yandex.com zijn toegevoegd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Voortdurend gebruik van alleen de lokale pagina die wordt weergegeven bij het openen van een nieuw tabblad is ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Er is een contextmenu toegevoegd aan de knop om de pagina opnieuw te laden, met extra herlaadmodi ('Normaal herladen', 'Hard herladen', 'Cache legen en hard herladen').\n<li class=\"l\"> Standaard zijn de knoppen Home en Chrome Labs toegevoegd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Voor versterkte privacy zijn de instellingen voor het vooraf laden van inhoud gewijzigd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Patches zijn toegevoegd aan het GN-bouwsysteem en de implementatie van sandbox-isolatie.\n<li class=\"l\"> Standaard is ondersteuning voor multi-threaded downloads ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\"> De tool pak is opgenomen, die wordt gebruikt voor het inpakken en uitpakken van bestanden in pak-formaat.\n<li class=\"l\"> In het .desktop-bestand zijn bij het starten experimentele functies van het webplatform ingeschakeld en zijn extra opstartmodi aangeboden: thorium-shell, Veilige modus en Donkere modus.  <\/ul>\n<p>Onder de wijzigingen in versie Thorium 110:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Synchronisatie met de codebasis van Chromium 110 is uitgevoerd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor het JPEG-XL-formaat is hersteld.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor de audio codec AC3 is toegevoegd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ondersteuning voor alle profielen van de HEVC\/H.265 codec is ge\u00efmplementeerd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Nieuwe optimalisaties bij de bouw van de V8-engine zijn toegevoegd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Experimentele functies chrome:\/\/flags\/#force-gpu-mem-available-mb, chrome:\/\/flags\/#double-click-close-tab, chrome:\/\/flags\/#show-fps-counter en chrome:\/\/flags\/#enable-native-gpu-memory-buffers zijn ingeschakeld.\n<li class=\"l\">  In Linux is er een opstartmodus met een tijdelijk profiel toegevoegd (het profiel wordt opgeslagen in de map \/tmp en wordt gewist na herstart).  <\/ul>\n<p>Daarnaast valt de ontwikkeling op van dezelfde auteur van de browser Mercury, die conceptueel lijkt op Thorium, maar is gebaseerd op Firefox. De browser bevat ook extra optimalisaties, maakt gebruik van AVX- en AES-instructies, en past veel patches toe van de projecten LibreWolf, Waterfox, FireDragon, PlasmaFox en GNU IceCat, die telemetrie, rapportage, debugfuncties en extra services zoals Pocket en contextuele aanbevelingen uitschakelen. De modus 'Do Not Track' is standaard ingeschakeld, de backspace-toets handler (browser.backspace_action) is hersteld en GPU-versnelling is geactiveerd. Volgens de ontwikkelaars presteert Mercury 8-20% beter dan Firefox.
