Dit distributie is opgezet door Gregory Kurzer als reactie op de stopzetting van de klassieke versies van CentOS en de overgang naar CentOS Stream. Gregory Kurzer, die ontwikkelaar van CentOS was, besloot alles vanaf nul te beginnen en lanceerde het Rocky Linux-project, dat hetzelfde zou doen als wat vroeger CentOS deed, maar nu apart van Red Hat.<\/p>\n<p>Aangezien het project compatibel moet zijn met RHEL op een eye-for-an-eye basis, bug-for-bug (terwijl er tegelijkertijd een debranding en verwijdering van alle koppelingen naar Red Hat plaatsvindt), is alles wat we kunnen zeggen over RHEL 9.4 of CentOS Stream 9 ook hier van toepassing: beschikbaar voor vier architecturen (x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, s390x), er zijn zowel installatiedistributies als varianten voor cloudplatforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), een Docker-image en natuurlijk Live-opties (te kiezen uit GNOME, XFCE, MATE, Cinnamon en KDE \u2013 de laatste optie is op de screenshot te zien). De basis voor Rocky is het OpenELA-repository, aangezien Red Hat de bronversies van zijn pakketten niet meer openbaar beschikbaar stelt op zijn platforms. Mechanismen voor een soepele upgrade van versies 8.x zijn niet voorzien \u2013 degenen die willen upgraden van een eerdere versie wordt aangeraden om 9.4 vanaf nul te
