De eerste stap was het toevoegen aan de codebasis van OpenSSH van een wijziging die het proces sshd-session, dat verantwoordelijk is voor de verwerking van sessies, uit sshd haalt. Binnen het sshd-proces blijven de functies die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het accepteren van netwerkverbindingen, het controleren van de configuratie, het laden van hostsleutels en het beheren van opstartprocessen volgens de parameter MaxStartups. Hierdoor bevat het uitvoerbare bestand sshd nu de minimale functionaliteit die nodig is voor het accepteren van een nieuwe netwerkverbinding en het starten van sshd-session voor het verwerken van de sessie.
