In de Libarchive-bibliotheek, die functies biedt voor het werken met verschillende archief- en gecomprimeerde bestandsformaten, zijn kwetsbaarheden ontdekt die leiden tot bufferoverloop bij de verwerking van speciaal gevormde archieven in RAR-indeling. De kwetsbaarheden bevinden zich in de functies execute_filter_audio (CVE-2024-48957) en execute_filter_delta (CVE-2024-48958) en worden veroorzaakt door het ontbreken van een controle dat het blok «src» het blok «dst» kan overlappen in beschadigde archieven. <\/p>\n

De kwetsbaarheden zijn verholpen in versie Libarchive 3.7.5, waarin ook meer dan een dozijn fouten zijn gecorrigeerd die leiden tot buffer overflow, toegang tot al vrijgegeven geheugen of integer overflows bij de verwerking van bestanden in de formaten cpio, lzop, rpm, zip, uu en rar. De correcties zijn gemarkeerd als beveiligingsproblemen, maar zonder CVE-identifiers. Het is nog onduidelijk of deze problemen kunnen worden uitgebuit om code-uitvoering te organiseren bij de verwerking van speciaal opgemaakte bestanden. <\/p>\n

Libarchive wordt als afhankelijkheid gebruikt in veel populaire pakketten, zoals smbclient, flatpak, appstream, libappimage, dpdk, cmake, rpm, nix, pacman, elfutils, unrar, claws-mail, ark, epiphany, evince, vagrant, vlc, mpv, gvfs, fwupd, systemd (optioneel) en file-roller (archiefbeheerder in GNOME).
