In Fedora Linux 43, systems with an x86 architecture will only retain the option to use GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition tables in all Fedora installations using UEFI. This change has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of Fedora development. If the proposal is approved, support for installing Fedora in UEFI mode on disks with MBR (Master Boot Record) partition tables will be discontinued on x86 systems, but will be maintained on ARM and RISC-V systems. <\/p>\n

The reason for discontinuing MBR support is cited as the low reliability of booting in such configurations, the inconsistency of MBR support in firmware, and the lack of proper testing in Fedora (the documentation for GRUB2 prescribes using GPT for UEFI). It is anticipated that by retaining only GPT support in the Anaconda installer for x86 systems, emergency shutdowns during the boot process caused by efibootmgr failures can be eliminated. The discontinuation of MBR support will also reduce the burden on those assisting users, simplifying maintenance and testing. <\/p>\n

MBR support in UEFI mode was initially added to Fedora in 2019 for compatibility with cloud platforms such as AWS that did not support GPT. Currently, cloud platforms have eliminated this limitation, making MBR support less relevant in this context.
