D7VK werkt door roepen om te zetten naar de Vulkan API en stelt gebruikers in staat om retro games, die gebruikmaken van de Direct3D 6 en 7 API, via Wine op Linux te draaien. De code van het project is geschreven in C++ en wordt verspreid onder de Zlib-licentie. Bij de ontwikkeling is gebruikgemaakt van de backend code van d3d9 van het DXVK-project - D7VK zet de Direct3D 6 en 7 API om naar Direct3D 9 roepen, die vervolgens worden omgezet naar de Vulkan API. De ontwikkelaar is niet van plan om D7VK op te nemen in DXVK, zoals dat gebeurde met de implementaties van Direct3D 8 en Direct3D 9 bovenop Vulkan.    <\/p>\n<p>De release 1.1 valt op door de toevoeging van experimentele ondersteuning voor Direct3D 6 naast de eerder ontwikkelde ondersteuning voor Direct3D 7.
