D7VK werkt door de oproepen naar de Vulkan API te vertalen en stelt gebruikers in staat om retro games die afhankelijk zijn van de Direct3D 5, 6 en 7 API, op Linux uit te voeren met behulp van Wine. De code van het project is geschreven in C++ en wordt verspreid onder de Zlib-licentie. Bij de ontwikkeling is de code van de d3d9-backend van het DXVK-project als basis gebruikt \u2014 D7VK zet de Direct3D 5, 6 en 7 API's om in oproepen naar Direct3D 9, die vervolgens worden vertaald naar de Vulkan API.
