In de toekomst zullen de computersystemen van Fermilab en andere betrokken laboratoria worden overgezet naar CentOS 8. Een nieuwe tak van Scientific Linux 8, gebaseerd op het pakketdatabestand <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=49613\">Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8<\/a><\/noindex>, zal niet worden gevormd.<\/p>\n<p>In plaats van een eigen distributie te onderhouden, zijn de ontwikkelaars van Fermilab van plan samen te werken met CERN en andere wetenschappelijke organisaties om CentOS te verbeteren en om te vormen tot een betere platform voor computersystemen die worden gebruikt bij het organiseren van experimenten in de hoge-energiefysica. De overgang naar CentOS zal de rekenplatforms voor wetenschappelijke toepassingen uniformiseren, wat het organiseren van werkzaamheden in bestaande en toekomstige internationale samenwerkingsprojecten, die verschillende laboratoria en instellingen bestrijken, zal vergemakkelijken. <\/p>\n<p>De middelen die vrijkomen door de delegatie van het onderhoud van de distributie en infrastructuur naar het CentOS-project, kunnen worden aangewend voor het verbeteren van componenten die specifiek zijn voor wetenschappelijk gebruik. De overgang van Scientific Linux naar CentOS zou geen problemen moeten veroorzaken, aangezien in de voorbereidingen voor de tak Scientific Linux 6 applicaties en extra stuurprogramma's, die specifiek zijn voor wetenschappelijk gebruik, al naar externe repositories zijn verplaatst.  <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/fedoraproject.org\/wiki\/EPEL\">EPEL<\/a><\/noindex> en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/elrepo.org\/\">elrepo.org<\/a><\/noindex>. Net als bij CentOS, bestonden de verschillen tussen Scientific Linux en RHEL voornamelijk uit herbranding en het verwijderen van koppelingen naar de diensten van Red Hat. <\/p>\n<p>Het onderhoud van de bestaande takken Scientific Linux 6.x en 7.x zal zonder wijziging worden voortgezet, synchroon met de reguliere <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/support\/policy\/updates\/errata\">ondersteuningscyclus<\/a><\/noindex> van RHEL 6.x en 7.x.
