De Stow-code is geschreven in Perl en wordt vanaf deze release verspreid onder de GPLv3-licentie (voorheen werd de GPLv2-licentie gebruikt).<\/p>\n<p>Stow hanteert een eenvoudige aanpak die anders is dan traditionele pakketbeheerders: alle componenten die aan een programma zijn gerelateerd, worden standaard in een aparte subdirectory in de map \/usr\/local\/stow ge\u00efnstalleerd (bijvoorbeeld \/usr\/local\/stow\/emacs). De taak van Stow bestaat eruit om symbolische links te plaatsen in de hi\u00ebrarchie van systeemmappen \/usr\/local en toezicht te houden op hun integriteit. <\/p>\n<p>Bij het verwijderen van een pakket worden alle bijbehorende symbolische links verwijderd. Binnen de directory \/usr\/local\/stow blijven de bestanden van ge\u00efnstalleerde programma's altijd onveranderd, Stow opereert alleen met symbolische links.<br \/>\nNaast het beheren van systeempakketten biedt het ook de mogelijkheid om programma's en configuratiebestanden (~\/.bashrc, ~\/.zshrc, enz.) in de thuismap van de gebruiker te beheren.<\/p>\n<p>Bij de voorbereiding van een nieuwe release lag de focus op het vereenvoudigen van de installatie, waarvoor enkele modules (texi2html) uit de afhankelijkheden zijn uitgesloten. Een aparte handler is toegevoegd voor bestanden en mappen die met een punt beginnen, en er is een bijbehorende optie &#171;&#8212;dotfiles&#187; ge\u00efntroduceerd voor automatische vervanging van het prefix &#171;dot-&#187; door een punt (bijvoorbeeld, bestand ~&#x2F;.bashrc wordt behandeld als pakket stow&#x2F;dot-bashrc). In het configuratiebestand .stowrc is de verwerking van het teken &#171;~&#187; als de thuismap toegevoegd.
