\nWe are all used to communication towers and masts looking boring or unappealing. Fortunately, there have been \u2014 and still are \u2014 interesting, unusual examples of these utilitarian structures throughout history. We have compiled a small selection of communication towers that we found particularly remarkable.

Stockholm Tower<\/h1>\n

\nLet's start with the 'trump card' \u2014 the most unusual and the oldest structure in our selection. It\u2019s hard to even call it a 'tower.' In 1887, a square-section steel frame tower was built in Stockholm. With spires on the corners, flagpoles, and decorations around the perimeter \u2014 it's beautiful!<\/p>\n

\nThe tower looked especially magical in winter when the wires iced over:<\/p>\n

\nIn 1913, the tower stopped being a telephone hub, but it was not demolished and remained as a city landmark. Unfortunately, exactly 40 years later, a fire occurred in the building, and the tower had to be dismantled.<\/p>\n

Microwave Network<\/h1>\n

\nIn 1948, the American company AT&T launched an expensive project to create a network of microwave relay towers. In 1951, the network, consisting of 107 towers, was put into operation. For the first time, it was possible to make telephone calls nationwide and transmit TV signals entirely 'over the air,' without the use of wired networks. The funnels of their antennas somewhat resembled gramophones or designer speakers built in the reverse horn scheme.<\/p>\n

However, later the network was abandoned because fiber optics replaced microwave relay communication. The fate of the towers varied: some rusted away idly, others were cut up for scrap metal, some were used by smaller companies for communication; others were repurposed for local residents' needs.<\/p>\n

Wardenclyffe Tower<\/h1>\n

\nNikola Tesla was a genius, and undoubtedly still undervalued. Perhaps there was a touch of madness to his ideas. If his investors had not let him down, he might have gone down in history as the man who changed the lives of all humanity. But now it's just speculation.<\/p>\n

In 1901, Tesla began constructing the Wardenclyffe Tower, which was intended to lay the foundation for a transatlantic communication line. Along with this, Tesla aimed to demonstrate the fundamental possibility of wireless electrical transmission \u2014 the inventor dreamed of creating a worldwide system for the transmission of electricity, broadcasting, and radio communication. Unfortunately, his ambitions conflicted with the business interests of his own investors, leading to Tesla being denied further funding for the project, which had to be closed in 1905.<\/p>\n

The tower was built next to Tesla's laboratory:<\/p>\n

\nUnfortunately, the creation of the genius has not survived to this day \u2014 the tower was dismantled in 1917.<\/p>\n

The three-pronged giant<\/h1>\n

\nThis tower, however, lives on, is actively used, and provides benefits. The 298-meter tall structure was erected on a hill in San Francisco. It was built in 1973 and continues to be used for television and radio broadcasts. Until 2017, Sutro Tower was the tallest architectural structure in the city.<\/p>\n

In shallow waters<\/h1>\n

\nOnce, the U.S. Air Force built several radio relay communication towers in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n

\nSteel tripods were installed on concrete bases directly on the seabed in shallow waters, while slender antenna masts with hardware platforms rose above the water, capable of holding a small house. It's a very unusual sight \u2014 a delicate mast sticking up in the middle of the sea.<\/p>\n

\nAs is often the case, advancements in communication technology rendered the towers obsolete, and today military personnel are unsure what to do with them: whether to cut them down, sink them, or leave them as they are. Interestingly, over the years, the antennas have transformed into unique artificial reefs with their tiny ecosystems, attracting enthusiasts of sea fishing and diving, who even submitted a petition to prevent the towers from being destroyed.<\/p>\n

Before radio<\/h1>\n

Maar aan het einde van de 18e eeuw was dit een geweldige doorbraak - tussen steden konden korte berichten via een keten van torens in ongeveer 20 minuten worden verzonden.<\/p>\n

\nAl tegen het midden van de 19e eeuw werden alle soorten optische telegrafen - inclusief varianten die lichtsignalen gebruikten - verdrongen door de elektrische, draadgebonden telegraaf. En op sommige monumenten zijn nog steeds torentjes te vinden waar vroeger semafor torens stonden. Bijvoorbeeld op het dak van het Winterpaleis.
