Multipass stelt ontwikkelaars in staat om met \u00e9\u00e9n commando zonder extra configuratie de gewenste versie van Ubuntu in een virtuele machine op te starten, bijvoorbeeld voor experimenten of om hun applicatie te testen. Voor het opstarten van een virtuele machine in Linux wordt KVM gebruikt, in Windows \u2014 Hyper-V, en in macOS \u2014 HyperKit. Het is ook mogelijk om VirtualBox te gebruiken voor het uitvoeren van virtuele machines. De code van het project is geschreven in C++ en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/canonical\/multipass\/\">wordt verspreid<\/a><\/noindex> onder GPLv3-licentie. Voor een snelle installatie van multipass in Ubuntu is voorbereid <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/snapcraft.io\/multipass\">snap-pakket<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<p>Multipass haalt zelf de benodigde besturingssysteemafbeelding op en houdt deze up-to-date. Voor configuratie kan cloud-init worden gebruikt. Er is een mogelijkheid om externe schijfpartities in de virtuele omgeving te monteren (met het commando multipass mount), maar er zijn ook hulpmiddelen beschikbaar voor het overdragen van individuele bestanden tussen het hostsysteem en de virtuele machine (multipass transfer). De thuismap van de gebruiker wordt automatisch in de virtuele machine gemonteerd als ~\/Home.
