Het systeem wordt ontwikkeld door verschillende Duitse universiteiten, is geschreven in C++, Qt en Python, en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/emsec\/hal\/\">wordt geleverd<\/a><\/noindex> valt onder de MIT-licentie.<\/p>\n<p>HAL maakt het mogelijk om het schema in de GUI te bekijken en te analyseren, en om ermee te manipuleren met behulp van scripts in de programmeertaal Python. In de scripts kan de bijbehorende 'standaardbibliotheek' van functies worden gebruikt, die bewerkingen van grafentheorie implementeren die nuttig zijn voor reverse engineering van digitale elektronische schema's (met deze functies kunnen scripts in enkele regels heuristisch bepaalde ontwerppatronen detecteren en eenvoudige obfuscaties opheffen). De bibliotheek bevat ook klassen voor projectbeheer in de IDE, die gebruikt kunnen worden bij het ontwikkelen van plugins voor het analyseren en inspecteren van verbindingen.
