Drew DeVault, auteur van de gebruikersomgeving Sway<\/a><\/noindex> en de mailclient Aerc<\/a><\/noindex>, uit nieuwsgierigheid probeerde ik een implementatie van Git te maken, geschreven in POSIX Shell. Het idee ontstond na een discussie over de complexiteit van de interne structuur van Git, waarna Drew besloot zijn argumenten te demonstreren door binnen een dag een werkbare versie van Git in pure Shell te schrijven. Tijdens het werk realiseerde Drew zich dat hij misschien wat overhaast was in zijn uitspraken over de eenvoud, vanwege het gebruik van een binaire indexindeling in Git, die niet helemaal geschikt is voor Shell. Maar terugtrekken was geen optie en door zich aan te passen slaagde hij erin Git in Shell te implementeren. <\/p>\n

Het project kreeg de naam shit<\/a><\/noindex> (Shell Git) en wordt uitsluitend gepositioneerd als een experiment om de interne werking van Git te bestuderen, niet bedoeld voor praktisch gebruik. Naast de constructies die in POSIX Shell zijn gedefinieerd, zijn er verschillende GNU-uitbreidingen in de code gebruikt, die werken in BusyBox. Voor het functioneren is ook de aanwezigheid van de zlib-bibliotheek vereist. De beschikbare functionaliteit is voldoende om een commit naar een git-repository uit te voeren.
