Het pakket onderscheidt zich door een laag systeemverbruik en de mogelijkheid om functionaliteit uit te breiden via plugins, waardoor ConnMan toegepast kan worden in embedded systemen. Het project werd aanvankelijk opgericht door Intel en Nokia tijdens de ontwikkeling van het MeeGo-platform. Later werd het netconfiguratiesysteem op basis van ConnMan gebruikt in het Tizen-platform en in enkele gespecialiseerde distributies en projecten, zoals Yocto, Sailfish, <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aldebaran-robotics.com\/\">Aldebaran Robotics<\/a><\/noindex> en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nest.com\/\">Nest<\/a><\/noindex>, evenals in verschillende consumentenapparaten met firmware op basis van Linux. De code van het project <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/git.kernel.org\/?p=network\/connman\/connman.git;a=summary\">wordt verspreid<\/a><\/noindex> onder GPLv2-licentie.<\/p>\n<p>De nieuwe release <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/connman\/connman.git\/commit\/?id=1ee420ace2b8edb0d4025f469aaa3d00d220dc98\">is opmerkelijk<\/a><\/noindex> biedt ondersteuning voor VPN <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=44695\">WireGuard<\/a><\/noindex>  en Wi-Fi daemon <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=51779\">IWD<\/a><\/noindex> (iNet Wireless Daemon), ontwikkeld door Intel als een lichtgewicht alternatief voor wpa_supplicant, geschikt voor het verbinden van embedded Linux-systemen met draadloze netwerken.<\/p>\n<p>Een belangrijk onderdeel van ConnMan is het achtergrondproces connmand, dat het netwerkbeheer beheert. De interactie en configuratie van verschillende types netwerksubsystemen gebeurt via plugins. Bijvoorbeeld, plugins zijn beschikbaar voor Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, 2G\/3G\/4G, VPN (Openconnect, OpenVPN, vpnc), PolicyKit, adres verkrijgen via DHCP, werken via proxyservers, DNS-resolver configuratie, en statistiekverzameling. Voor de interactie met apparaten wordt het Linux-kernel netlink subsysteem gebruikt, en voor communicatie met andere applicaties worden commando's via D-Bus verzonden.
