Timeshift is een back-upsysteem dat rsync gebruikt met harde koppelingen of Btrfs-snapshots voor functionaliteit die lijkt op Systeemherstel in Windows en Time Machine in macOS. Het programma is opgenomen in de repositories van vele distributies en wordt standaard gebruikt in PCLinuxOS en Linux Mint. De kwetsbaarheid is verholpen in de release <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/teejee2008\/timeshift\/releases\/tag\/v20.03\">Timeshift 20.03<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<p>Het probleem wordt veroorzaakt door onjuist omgaan met de openbare map \/tmp. Tijdens het maken van een back-up cre\u00ebert het programma de map \/tmp\/timeshift, waarin een submap met een willekeurige naam wordt aangemaakt, die een shell-script met commando's bevat dat met root-rechten wordt uitgevoerd. De submap met het script heeft een onvoorspelbare naam, maar de map \/tmp\/timeshift zelf is voorspelbaar en wordt niet gecontroleerd op vervanging of het cre\u00ebren van een symbolische link in plaats daarvan. Een aanvaller kan namens zichzelf de map \/tmp\/timeshift aanmaken, waarna hij het verschijnen van de submap kan volgen en deze submap en het bestand daarin kan vervangen.
