As we conclude our story, we share the results of the work done and interesting solutions that may be useful to you.

De nieuwe interface

Here, as they say, it's better to see it once.

On the new BMS rack model, we can immediately see that the lower paired PDU modules are overloaded (the total current exceeds the allowable 16A - a "blue" notification), while the upper ones are underloaded. If one input is turned off, the entire load will switch to the second one, and the remaining powered lower module will turn off due to overload. To prevent this, the data center support service will notify the client in advance and send recommendations on how to redistribute the load.

Simple equipment addition. In the new BMS, virtual sensors for summing the currents of the modules and the power of the rack are already included in the templates of standard racks and are created automatically after adding to the PDU rack. In the old BMS, they had to be created manually and then dragged onto the map, which increased the risk of errors due to the "human factor."

Unlimited creative freedom. Now we have no limitations in creating virtual sensors. We can build absolutely any mathematical models of any variables. This means we can create complex virtual sensors (previously, we could only sum values) and better analyze the statistics and trends of engineering systems' operations. This enhances the quality of decision-making regarding system configuration, equipment replacement, and resource management.

Clear interface. The new interface is free from cluttered icons, fans spin smoothly, switches click. And the most convenient feature is the ability to indicate the state of PDU Line A/B within the racks. We tried to create something similar in the old BMS, but the number of overlapping icons per square centimeter on the map made us abandon that idea.

Now it's pleasant to look at:

However, we didn't fully understand how it should look.

Even before the development of the new BMS, we visited about ten data centers in the Netherlands. One of the goals was to see examples of such a page implementation.

And in none of the data centers was it shown to us – somewhere it was absent, somewhere it was 'currently under development', and somewhere it was considered a 'big commercial secret'. Therefore, in our specification for creating the new BMS, a detailed description of this very important page for us was absent.

As a result, we literally came up with it 'on the go'. At that moment, I had to remotely consult colleagues in the data center. Flipping through pages of the BMS on a phone in search of scattered data was very inconvenient, and the first version was practically sketched on a napkin. One page. This is what the developers implemented based on the photo.

Following the example of cautious Dutch colleagues, we will not demonstrate the final version of our main page, especially since each data center is unique and there is no point in copying. But we will describe the two main principles of its formation:

This is a table designed for the format of a vertically oriented smartphone screen (or a monitor, but maintaining the vertical orientation), with all important information displayed on one screen. Above the table is a 'summary' of active incidents, so placing them together was more convenient in a vertical format.

The arrangement of the cells in the table mirrors the architecture of the data center (physical or logical). We abandoned the alphabetical order of systems, as might seem logical at first glance. The sequence reflects the visual associations of the data center staff – as if they are physically monitoring all rooms and systems. This simplifies information retrieval.

de status van de belangrijkste systemen van het datacenter;

de aanwezigheid van nieuwe, onbehandelde incidenten;

We certainly didn't throw away the old iron server; instead, we 'lightened' it: we cleaned it of thousands of 'commercial' virtual sensors and PDUs, leaving only a few dozen of the most critical devices, such as generators, UPS, air conditioners, pumps, leak detectors, and temperature sensors. In this mode, its former speed has returned, and it can serve as a 'reserve of reserves'. By the way, after removing the PDUs from the old BMS, we freed up about 1000 now unnecessary licenses.
