IWD kan zowel op zichzelf worden gebruikt als als backend voor netwerkconfigurators zoals Network Manager en ConnMan. Dit project is geschikt voor gebruik in embedded systemen en geoptimaliseerd voor minimaal geheugengebruik en schijfruimte. IWD maakt geen gebruik van externe bibliotheken en maakt alleen gebruik van de mogelijkheden die door de standaard Linux-kernel worden geboden (voor de werking zijn alleen de Linux-kernel en Glibc nodig). Het bevat een eigen implementatie van een DHCP-client en een set <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/src\/crypto.h\">cryptografische functies<\/a><\/noindex>. De code van het project is geschreven in C en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/\">wordt geleverd<\/a><\/noindex> onder LGPLv2.1.<\/p>\n<p>In <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/ChangeLog\">in de nieuwe release<\/a><\/noindex> ondersteuning voor technologie toegevoegd <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wi-Fi_Direct\">Wi-Fi Direct<\/a><\/noindex> (Wi-Fi P2P), waarmee een directe draadloze verbinding tussen apparaten kan worden gerealiseerd zonder een toegangspunt te gebruiken. Fouten die verband houden met de verwerking zijn verholpen <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/td\/docs\/wireless\/controller\/technotes\/80211r-ft\/b-80211r-dg.html\">FT AKM<\/a><\/noindex> (Authenticated Key Management Fast Transition), <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IEEE_802.11ai\">FILS<\/a><\/noindex>  (Fast Initial Link Setup) en <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/wizardfi.com\/wifi\/2019\/01\/23\/finding-owe-in-the-rsne.html\">RSNE<\/a><\/noindex> (Robust Security Network Element).
