We are excited to share the news that Contour is now part of the project incubator from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). <\/p>\n

If you haven't heard of Contour yet \u2014 it is a simple and scalable open-source ingress controller for routing traffic to applications running in Kubernetes. <\/p>\n

In this article, we invite you to learn about Contour's functionality. We will explain what it means for the project to be accepted into CNCF. We will also share plans for future development.<\/p>\n

All attention on Ingress.<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

To begin with, an introduction. The Kubernetes community has already determined how to approach the tasks of launching workloads and providing access from workloads to storage. However, in the realm of network creation and connectivity, there is still room for innovation. A key, and very important, task is delivering external traffic into the cluster. In Kubernetes, this is referred to as Ingress, which is exactly what Contour does. It is a tool that you can easily use in the cluster to deliver traffic as needed, but with functional headroom for future growth as your Kubernetes cluster expands.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Technically, Contour works by deploying Envoy<\/a><\/noindex> to provide reverse proxy and load balancer capabilities. It natively supports dynamic updates of configurations and can scale to multiteam Kubernetes clusters, offering various load balancing strategies.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There are numerous alternatives for running Ingress Controller in Kubernetes, but Contour is unique in that it solely focuses on this task, executing it with a high level of performance while keeping security and multi-user mode in mind.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Contour, ontwikkeld eind 2017 door de Heption-ontwikkelaars, bereikte in november 2019 versie 1.0 en kan nu bogen op een gemeenschap van 600 leden in Slack, 300 ontwikkelaars, 90 committers en 5 maintainers. Een van de opmerkelijke feiten is dat het is ge\u00efmplementeerd door verschillende bedrijven en organisaties, waaronder Adobe, Kinvolk, Kintone, PhishLabs en Replicated. Omdat we hebben geconstateerd dat gebruikers Contour in productie toepassen en weten dat we een stabiele gemeenschap hebben, heeft CNCF besloten dat Contour direct van de sandbox naar de incubator kan.<\/p>\n

Voor ons is dit van groot belang, omdat we zo'n uitnodiging beschouwen als een bevestiging dat we een duurzaam, gastvrij en open gemeenschap zijn, die voldoet aan de technische doelstellingen van CNCF. Bovendien werkt Contour goed samen in het ecosysteem met andere projecten, zoals Kubernetes en Envoy. <\/p>\n

We hopen dat, naarmate er meer mensen zich bij ons aansluiten, de diversiteit en de snelheid van het toevoegen van nieuwe functies aanzienlijk zullen toenemen. We zullen maandelijks nieuwe versies uitbrengen, zodat we gebruikers niet lang hoeven te laten wachten op nieuwe functionaliteiten, bugfixes en verbeteringen aan de beveiligingsparameters.<\/p>\n

Bijdrage aan het Kubernetes-ecosysteem<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

In de nabije toekomst willen we verzoeken van de gemeenschap met betrekking tot nieuwe functies verzamelen. Sommige van deze verzoeken, zoals de ondersteuning voor externe authenticatie, worden al geruime tijd door gebruikers verwacht, maar we hebben pas recent de middelen hiervoor beschikbaar gekregen. Ook kunnen dergelijke taken alleen worden gerealiseerd met veel feedback van de gemeenschap.<\/a><\/noindex> Andere zaken die we in de nabije toekomst gepland hebben zijn:<\/p>\n
