Karolina Stage, minister of digitalization in the Danish government, confirmed the agreement between the government and regional authorities on the digital sovereignty strategy. In the first stage of implementing the new strategy, the Danish Ministry of Digitalization will stop using Microsoft products in favor of open source software. LibreOffice will be used as the office suite. Half of the employees will be transitioned to LibreOffice within the next month. The transition of all employees to open source software is planned to be completed by the end of the year.
The decision to abandon Microsoft as the main IT service provider has also been made by the municipal authorities of Copenhagen and Aarhus. Reasons for the transition include financial considerations, dependence on a company with almost monopolistic market position, and the worsening geopolitical climate due to statements by the US president expressing a desire to gain control over Greenland. Financial considerations relate to the fact that Microsoft software purchasing costs have increased by 72% over five years—rising from 313 million kroner in 2018 to 538 million kroner in 2023.
