Aby wykorzysta\u0107 t\u0119 luk\u0119, atakuj\u0105cy musi mie\u0107 fizyczny dost\u0119p do zaszyfrowanego no\u015bnika, co czyni t\u0119 metod\u0119 zasadniczo skuteczn\u0105 jedynie w atakach na zaszyfrowane zewn\u0119trzne urz\u0105dzenia pami\u0119ci, takie jak dyski Flash, do kt\u00f3rych z\u0142o\u015bliwy u\u017cytkownik ma dost\u0119p, ale nie zna has\u0142a do odszyfrowania danych.    <\/p>\n<p>Atak jest stosowana tylko dla formatu LUKS2 i zwi\u0105zana z manipulacj\u0105 metadanymi, kt\u00f3re odpowiadaj\u0105 za aktywacj\u0119 rozszerzenia \u201eonline reencryption\u201d, pozwalaj\u0105cego w razie potrzeby zmieni\u0107 klucz dost\u0119pu, inicjowa\u0107 proces ponownego szyfrowania danych na bie\u017c\u0105co bez przerywania pracy z partycj\u0105. Poniewa\u017c proces odszyfrowania i szyfrowania z nowym kluczem zajmuje du\u017co czasu, \u201eonline reencryption\u201d daje mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 nieprzerywania pracy z partycj\u0105 i wykonywania ponownego szyfrowania w tle, stopniowo przekszta\u0142caj\u0105c dane z jednego klucza na inny. Istnieje r\u00f3wnie\u017c mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 wyboru pustego klucza docelowego, co pozwala na przekszta\u0142cenie partycji w form\u0119 odszyfrowan\u0105.     <\/p>\n<p>Atakuj\u0105cy mo\u017ce wprowadzi\u0107 zmiany w metadanych LUKS2, symuluj\u0105ce awaryjne przerwanie operacji odszyfrowania w wyniku awarii, i osi\u0105gn\u0105\u0107 odszyfrowanie cz\u0119\u015bci partycji po aktywowaniu i u\u017cyciu zmodyfikowanego no\u015bnika przez w\u0142a\u015bciciela. Przy tym u\u017cytkownik, kt\u00f3ry pod\u0142\u0105czy\u0142 zmodyfikowany no\u015bnik i odblokowa\u0142 go poprawnym has\u0142em, nie otrzymuje \u017cadnego ostrze\u017cenia o przebiegu procesu przywracania przerwanej operacji ponownego szyfrowania i mo\u017ce dowiedzie\u0107 si\u0119 o post\u0119pie tej operacji jedynie za pomoc\u0105 komendy \u201eluks Dump\u201d. Zakres danych, kt\u00f3re mo\u017ce odszyfrowa\u0107 atakuj\u0105cy, zale\u017cy od rozmiaru nag\u0142\u00f3wka LUKS2, jednak przy domy\u015blnym rozmiarze (16 MiB) mo\u017ce przekracza\u0107 3 GB.      <\/p>\n<p>Problem ten wynika z tego, \u017ce mimo i\u017c dekrypcja wymaga oblicze\u0144 i weryfikacji hashy nowych i starych kluczy, na pocz\u0105tku dekrypcji hash nie jest wymagany, je\u015bli nowe ustawienie zak\u0142ada brak klucza do szyfrowania (plaintext). Ponadto, metadane LUKS2, w kt\u00f3rych okre\u015blany jest algorytm szyfrowania, nie s\u0105 chronione przed modyfikacj\u0105, gdy trafi\u0105 w r\u0119ce osoby nieuprawnionej. Aby zablokowa\u0107 t\u0119 luk\u0119, deweloperzy dodali do LUKS2 dodatkow\u0105 ochron\u0119 metadanych, dla kt\u00f3rych teraz weryfikowany jest dodatkowy hash, obliczany na podstawie znanych kluczy oraz zawarto\u015bci metadanych, tzn. atakuj\u0105cy nie mo\u017ce teraz bez wykrycia zmieni\u0107 metadanych, nie znaj\u0105c has\u0142a do dekrypcji.    <\/p>\n<p>Typowy scenariusz ataku wymaga, aby osoba nieuprawniona mia\u0142a mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 wielokrotnego zdobycia no\u015bnika. Na pocz\u0105tku atakuj\u0105cy, kt\u00f3ry nie zna has\u0142a, wprowadza zmiany w obszarze metadanych, inicjuj\u0105c dekrypcj\u0119 cz\u0119\u015bci danych podczas nast\u0119pnej aktywacji no\u015bnika. Nast\u0119pnie no\u015bnik wraca na miejsce, a atakuj\u0105cy czeka, a\u017c u\u017cytkownik go pod\u0142\u0105czy, wprowadzaj\u0105c has\u0142o. Podczas aktywacji urz\u0105dzenia przez u\u017cytkownika uruchamiany jest proces w tle ponownego szyfrowania, w trakcie kt\u00f3rego cz\u0119\u015b\u0107 zaszyfrowanych danych jest zast\u0119powana danymi odszyfrowanymi. Je\u015bli atakuj\u0105cy ponownie zdob\u0119dzie urz\u0105dzenie, cz\u0119\u015b\u0107 danych na no\u015bniku b\u0119dzie w formie odszyfrowanej.          <\/p>\n<p>Problem zosta\u0142 wykryty przez maintenancera projektu cryptsetup i usuni\u0119ty w aktualizacjach cryptsetup 2.4.3 i 2.3.7. Stan formowania aktualizacji usuwaj\u0105cych problem w dystrybucjach mo\u017cna \u015bledzi\u0107 na tych stronach: Debian, RHEL, SUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch.
