IWD mo\u017ce by\u0107 u\u017cywane jako samodzielne rozwi\u0105zanie, a tak\u017ce jako backend dla konfigurator\u00f3w sieci Network Manager i ConnMan. Projekt nadaje si\u0119 do zastosowania na urz\u0105dzeniach wbudowanych i jest zoptymalizowany pod k\u0105tem minimalnego zu\u017cycia pami\u0119ci i miejsca na dysku. IWD nie wykorzystuje zewn\u0119trznych bibliotek i korzysta wy\u0142\u0105cznie z mo\u017cliwo\u015bci udost\u0119pnionych przez standardowe j\u0105dro Linux (do dzia\u0142ania wystarczy j\u0105dro Linux i Glibc). W sk\u0142ad wchodzi w\u0142asna implementacja klienta DHCP oraz zestaw funkcji kryptograficznych. Kod projektu zosta\u0142 napisany w j\u0119zyku C i jest udost\u0119pniany na licencji LGPLv2.1.      <\/p>\n<p>W nowym wydaniu wprowadzono nast\u0119puj\u0105ce nowo\u015bci:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Dodano wsparcie dla konfigurowania adres\u00f3w, bram i tras dla protoko\u0142\u00f3w IPv4 i IPv6 (w ramach iwd bez u\u017cycia dodatkowych narz\u0119dzi).\n<li class=\"l\"> Zapewniono mo\u017cliwo\u015b\u0107 zmiany adresu MAC przy uruchomieniu.\n<li class=\"l\"> Wykorzystano list\u0119 punkt\u00f3w dost\u0119pu, kt\u00f3re mog\u0105 by\u0107 u\u017cywane do roamingu (wcze\u015bniej do roamingu wybierano jeden punkt dost\u0119pu z najlepszymi parametrami, a teraz prowadzona jest lista, uszeregowana wed\u0142ug BSS, dla szybkiego wyboru zapasowych punkt\u00f3w dost\u0119pu w przypadku awarii po\u0142\u0105czenia z wybranym).\n<li class=\"l\"> Zrealizowano buforowanie i wznowienie sesji TLS dla EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol).\n<li class=\"l\"> Dodano wsparcie dla szyfrowania z kluczami 256-bitowymi.\n<li class=\"l\"> W implementacji trybu punktu dost\u0119powego dodano wsparcie dla autoryzacji klient\u00f3w, kt\u00f3rzy u\u017cywaj\u0105 przestarza\u0142ego protoko\u0142u TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol).
