Naprawa problemu zosta\u0142a skoordynowana z deweloperami serwer\u00f3w DNS, kt\u00f3rzy jednocze\u015bnie wydali aktualizacje z popraw\u0105 podatno\u015bci w swoich produktach. Ochrona przed atakiem zosta\u0142a zrealizowana w wydaniach<br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/nlnetlabs.nl\/news\/2020\/May\/19\/unbound-1.10.1-released\/\">Unbound 1.10.1<\/a><\/noindex>, <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.knot-resolver.cz\/2020-05-19-knot-resolver-5.1.1.html\">Knot Resolver 5.1.1<\/a><\/noindex>,  <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/downloads.powerdns.com\/releases\">PowerDNS Recursor 4.3.1, 4.2.2, 4.1.16<\/a><\/noindex>, <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mail-archive.com\/bind-announce@lists.isc.org\/msg00573.html\">BIND 9.11.19, 9.14.12, 9.16.3<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<p>Atak opiera si\u0119 na wykorzystywaniu przez atakuj\u0105cego zapyta\u0144, kt\u00f3re odnosz\u0105 si\u0119 do du\u017cej liczby wcze\u015bniej niewyst\u0119puj\u0105cych fikcyjnych rekord\u00f3w NS, kt\u00f3rym delegowane jest okre\u015blenie nazwy, ale bez wskazania w odpowiedzi rekord\u00f3w glue z informacjami o adresach IP serwer\u00f3w NS. Na przyk\u0142ad, atakuj\u0105cy wysy\u0142a zapytanie o okre\u015blenie nazwy sd1.attacker.com, kontroluj\u0105c serwer DNS odpowiedzialny za domen\u0119 attacker.com. W odpowiedzi na zapytanie resolvera do serwera DNS atakuj\u0105cego, zwracana jest odpowied\u017a, deleguj\u0105ca okre\u015blenie adresu sd1.attacker.com serwerowi DNS ofiary poprzez wskazanie w odpowiedzi rekord\u00f3w NS bez szczeg\u00f3\u0142\u00f3w dotycz\u0105cych adres\u00f3w IP serwer\u00f3w NS. Poniewa\u017c wspomniany serwer NS wcze\u015bniej si\u0119 nie pojawi\u0142 i jego adres IP nie jest podany, resolver pr\u00f3buje okre\u015bli\u0107 adres IP serwera NS, kieruj\u0105c zapytanie do serwera DNS ofiary, obs\u0142uguj\u0105cego docelow\u0105 domen\u0119 (victim.com).<\/p>\n<p><center><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nxnsattack.com\/dns-ns-paper.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Atak NXNSAttack, wp\u0142ywaj\u0105cy na wszystkie resolver DNS\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/d56af64ec0f47b2673bd6ff5869e1087.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Problem polega na tym, \u017ce atakuj\u0105cy mo\u017ce zwr\u00f3ci\u0107 w odpowiedzi ogromn\u0105 list\u0119 unikalnych serwer\u00f3w NS z nieistniej\u0105cymi fikcyjnymi nazwami subdomen ofiary (fake-1.victim.com, fake-2.victim.com, ... fake-1000.victim.com). Resolver spr\u00f3buje wys\u0142a\u0107 zapytanie do serwera DNS ofiary, ale otrzyma odpowied\u017a, \u017ce domena nie zosta\u0142a znaleziona, po czym spr\u00f3buje zidentyfikowa\u0107 nast\u0119pny serwer NS na li\u015bcie i tak dalej, a\u017c nie przejrzy wszystkich wymienionych rekord\u00f3w NS przez atakuj\u0105cego. W zwi\u0105zku z tym, na jedno zapytanie atakuj\u0105cego, resolver wysy\u0142a ogromn\u0105 liczb\u0119 zapyta\u0144 do okre\u015blenia host\u00f3w NS. Poniewa\u017c nazwy serwer\u00f3w NS s\u0105 generowane losowo i odnosz\u0105 si\u0119 do nieistniej\u0105cych subdomen, nie s\u0105 one wydobywane z pami\u0119ci podr\u0119cznej, a ka\u017cde zapytanie atakuj\u0105cego prowadzi do lawiny zapyta\u0144 do serwera DNS obs\u0142uguj\u0105cego domen\u0119 ofiary.<\/p>\n<p><center><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.blog.nic.cz\/2020\/05\/19\/nxnsattack-upgrade-resolvers-to-stop-new-kind-of-random-subdomain-attack\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Atak NXNSAttack, wp\u0142ywaj\u0105cy na wszystkie resolver DNS\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/9a1ca424c949d7732ce361560ff71e0c.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Badacze zbadali stopie\u0144 podatno\u015bci publicznych resolver\u00f3w DNS na problem i ustalili, \u017ce przy wysy\u0142aniu zapyta\u0144 do resolvera CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) mo\u017cna osi\u0105gn\u0105\u0107 pomno\u017cenie liczby pakiet\u00f3w (PAF, Packet Amplification Factor) o 48 razy, Google (8.8.8.8) \u2014 30 razy, FreeDNS (37.235.1.174) \u2014 50 razy, OpenDNS (208.67.222.222) \u2014 32 razy. Bardziej zauwa\u017calne wska\u017aniki obserwuje si\u0119 dla<br \/>\nLevel3 (209.244.0.3) \u2014 273 razy, Quad9 (9.9.9.9) \u2014 415 razy<br \/>\nSafeDNS (195.46.39.39) \u2014 274 razy, Verisign (64.6.64.6) \u2014 202 razy,<br \/>\nUltra (156.154.71.1) \u2014 405 razy, Comodo Secure (8.26.56.26) \u2014 435 razy, DNS.Watch (84.200.69.80) \u2014 486 razy, oraz Norton ConnectSafe (199.85.126.10) \u2014 569 razy. Dla serwer\u00f3w opartych na BIND 9.12.3 dzi\u0119ki r\u00f3wnoleg\u0142emu przetwarzaniu zapyta\u0144 poziom wzmocnienia mo\u017ce osi\u0105gn\u0105\u0107 1000. W Knot Resolver 5.1.0 poziom wzmocnienia wynosi oko\u0142o kilkana\u015bcie razy (24-48), poniewa\u017c ustalanie nazw NS odbywa si\u0119 sekwencyjnie i ogranicza si\u0119 do wewn\u0119trznego ograniczenia liczby krok\u00f3w rozwi\u0105zywania nazw dozwolonych dla jednego zapytania.<\/p>\n<p>Wyr\u00f3\u017cnia si\u0119 dwie g\u0142\u00f3wne strategie ochrony. Dla system\u00f3w z DNSSEC <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.blog.nic.cz\/2020\/05\/19\/nxnsattack-upgrade-resolvers-to-stop-new-kind-of-random-subdomain-attack\/\">zaproponowano<\/a><\/noindex> ju\u017c trzeba co\u015b wykorzysta\u0107 (pracuj\u0119 z klastrowym Proxmox VE 5.x i ZFS over iSCSI). <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc8198\">RFC-8198<\/a><\/noindex> w celu zapobiegania omijaniu cache'a DNS, poniewa\u017c zapytania s\u0105 wysy\u0142ane z losowymi nazwami. Meritum metody polega na generowaniu negatywnych odpowiedzi bez odwo\u0142ywania si\u0119 do autorytatywnych serwer\u00f3w DNS, stosuj\u0105c weryfikacj\u0119 w oparciu o zakresy przez DNSSEC. Prostszy spos\u00f3b polega na ograniczeniu liczby nazw, kt\u00f3re mo\u017cna okre\u015bli\u0107 podczas przetwarzania jednego delegowanego zapytania, ale ta metoda mo\u017ce prowadzi\u0107 do problem\u00f3w z niekt\u00f3rymi istniej\u0105cymi konfiguracjami, poniewa\u017c limity nie s\u0105 okre\u015blone w protokole.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\"
