O projeto RPM4 \u00e9 desenvolvido pela Red Hat e \u00e9 utilizado em distribui\u00e7\u00f5es como RHEL (incluindo projetos derivados como CentOS, Scientific Linux, AsiaLinux, Red Flag Linux, Oracle Linux), Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE, ALT Linux, OpenMandriva, Mageia, PCLinuxOS, Tizen e muitas outras. Anteriormente, uma equipe independente de desenvolvedores trabalhava no projeto RPM5, que n\u00e3o est\u00e1 diretamente relacionado ao RPM4 e atualmente est\u00e1 abandonado (n\u00e3o atualizado desde 2010). O c\u00f3digo do projeto \u00e9 distribu\u00eddo sob as licen\u00e7as GPLv2 e LGPLv2.          <\/p>\n<p>As melhorias mais not\u00e1veis no RPM 4.18:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Uma nova interface interativa chamada &#171;rpmspec &#8212;shell&#187; foi proposta, suportando a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de macros e Lua embutido (rpmlua).\n<li class=\"l\"> Foi adicionada uma nova ferramenta de linha de comando rpmuncompress, que simplifica a extra\u00e7\u00e3o de v\u00e1rios arquivos.\n<li class=\"l\"> O c\u00f3digo para tratamento de arquivos grandes foi reestruturado, incluindo prote\u00e7\u00e3o contra vulnerabilidades que manipulam links simb\u00f3licos durante a instala\u00e7\u00e3o, recupera\u00e7\u00e3o e limpeza.\n<li class=\"l\"> Foi adicionado um novo backend OpenPGP para lidar com assinaturas de pacotes, baseado no projeto Sequoia (implementa\u00e7\u00e3o do OpenPGP em Rust).\n<li class=\"l\"> Foi proposto um macro mais claro &#171;ond&#187; para definir as condi\u00e7\u00f5es durante a montagem.\n<li class=\"l\"> Ao definir depend\u00eancias fracas (weak dependency), foi implementado suporte para as tags &#171;meta&#187; e &#171;pre&#187;.\n<li class=\"l\"> Uma nova
