O pacote inclui o processo em segundo plano pppd, utilizado para negocia\u00e7\u00e3o de conex\u00e3o, autentica\u00e7\u00e3o e configura\u00e7\u00e3o da interface de rede, al\u00e9m de utilit\u00e1rios auxiliares pppstats e pppdump. O c\u00f3digo do projeto \u00e9 distribu\u00eddo sob a licen\u00e7a BSD. O pacote oferece suporte oficial ao Linux e Solaris (sem suporte, h\u00e1 c\u00f3digo para NeXTStep, FreeBSD, SunOS 4.x, SVR4, Tru64, AIX e Ultrix).    <\/p>\n<p>A vers\u00e3o anterior significativa ppp 2.4.0 foi lan\u00e7ada em 2000. O aumento significativo no n\u00famero da vers\u00e3o se deve a altera\u00e7\u00f5es que quebram a compatibilidade com plugins do pppd e uma reestrutura\u00e7\u00e3o completa do sistema de build. Entre as melhorias:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Adicionado suporte ao protocolo de autentica\u00e7\u00e3o PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol).\n<li class=\"l\"> Adicionada a capacidade de carregar arquivos com certificados e chaves no formato PKCS12.\n<li class=\"l\"> Proposto um ambiente de build baseado no GNU Autoconf e Automake. Adicionado suporte ao pkgconfig.\n<li class=\"l\"> API para desenvolvimento de plugins para pppd foi significativamente reformulada.\n<li class=\"l\"> Suporte ao protocolo IPX foi descontinuado.\n<li class=\"l\"> A instala\u00e7\u00e3o do execut\u00e1vel pppd com a flag suid root foi descontinuada.\n<li class=\"l\"> Novas op\u00e7\u00f5es ipv6cp-noremote, ipv6cp-nosend, ipv6cp-use-remotenumber, ipv6-up-script, ipv6-down-script, show-options, usepeerwins, ipcp-no-address, ipcp-no-addresses e nosendip foram adicionadas ao pppd.\n<li class=\"l\"> Na plataforma Linux, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel
