Os desenvolvedores do projeto GTK descontinuaram o suporte ao GTK2 h\u00e1 mais de cinco anos e o suporte ao GTK2 desatualizado nos reposit\u00f3rios principais est\u00e1 se tornando problem\u00e1tico. Distribui\u00e7\u00f5es que j\u00e1 pararam de fornecer GTK2 incluem Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16, openSUSE 16 e Arch Linux. O Debian \u00e9 incentivado a seguir seu exemplo.        <\/p>\n<p>Entre os projetos significativos relacionados ao GTK2, at\u00e9 recentemente permanecia o GIMP, mas a partir do GIMP 3.0 esse editor gr\u00e1fico foi portado para o GTK3. Ainda permanecem no reposit\u00f3rio do Debian cerca de 150 pacotes com depend\u00eancias relacionadas ao GTK2, e caso o GTK2 seja descontinuado, esses pacotes ter\u00e3o que ser removidos, pois, em sua maioria, n\u00e3o est\u00e3o sendo desenvolvidos e a portabilidade para o GTK3 \u00e9 improv\u00e1vel.         <\/p>\n<p>Muitos desses pacotes ainda t\u00eam usu\u00e1rios ativos que n\u00e3o pretendem mudar para outros programas. Tamb\u00e9m surgiram desenvolvedores que defendem a manuten\u00e7\u00e3o do suporte ao GTK2 no Debian, considerando que os motivos para sua remo\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00e3o infundados. Por exemplo, a men\u00e7\u00e3o de que o GTK3 foi lan\u00e7ado h\u00e1 15 anos n\u00e3o faz sentido, j\u00e1 que o GTK3 n\u00e3o substitui o GTK2, assim como o GTK4 n\u00e3o substitui o GTK3.     <\/p>\n<p>Tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o questionados argumentos como a falta de suporte a HiDPI e Wayland no GTK2, pois isso nem \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio e os usu\u00e1rios est\u00e3o satisfeitos. A compara\u00e7\u00e3o com o Arch Linux, onde o GTK2 foi exclu\u00eddo do reposit\u00f3rio principal, mas est\u00e1 dispon\u00edvel em fontes n\u00e3o oficiais, \u00e9 considerada inadequada. Durante a discuss\u00e3o, tamb\u00e9m foi levantada a pergunta de como o GTK2 \u00e9 pior que o GCC 3.3, que foi fornecido por mais de 20 anos, at\u00e9 o Debian 12, sendo 16 anos apenas para fornecer libstdc++5 para arquivos execut\u00e1veis desatualizados.    <\/p>\n<p>Os apoiadores da remo\u00e7\u00e3o do GTK2 citam a impossibilidade de garantir a seguran\u00e7a do pacote como uma das raz\u00f5es, enquanto os opositores argumentam que, at\u00e9 agora, a seguran\u00e7a do GTK2 no Debian raramente preocupou algu\u00e9m, e o \u00faltimo erro marcado como vulnerabilidade data de 2015.          <\/p>\n<p>Atualmente, est\u00e1 em discuss\u00e3o maneiras de manter o suporte para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es ligadas ao GTK2 nos distribui\u00e7\u00f5es. Uma das op\u00e7\u00f5es propostas \u00e9 mover o GTK2 e as aplica\u00e7\u00f5es relacionadas para um reposit\u00f3rio n\u00e3o oficial separado. Tamb\u00e9m foram mencionadas ideias como a cria\u00e7\u00e3o de uma camada que traduza a API do GTK2 para o GTK3 e a transi\u00e7\u00e3o para a oferta de um fork do GTK2 pelo projeto Ardour.
