Os desenvolvedores do Notepad++, um editor de c\u00f3digo aberto para a plataforma Windows, publicaram uma an\u00e1lise do incidente em que a infraestrutura de rede do provedor foi comprometida e alguns usu\u00e1rios do Notepad++ receberam arquivos execut\u00e1veis falsificados, baixados atrav\u00e9s do sistema de entrega autom\u00e1tica de atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es WinGUp. <\/p>\n

O ataque foi realizado por meio de redirecionamento seletivo do tr\u00e1fego entre o usu\u00e1rio e o servidor de download de atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es. A falsifica\u00e7\u00e3o foi poss\u00edvel devido a uma vulnerabilidade no mecanismo de verifica\u00e7\u00e3o e integridade da atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o baixada. O invasor, capaz de se infiltrarse no tr\u00e1fego em tr\u00e2nsito, poderia substituir o manifesto da atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o e iniciar a solicita\u00e7\u00e3o de download de sua atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o falsa e dos metadados associados para verifica\u00e7\u00e3o de integridade. <\/p>\n

Uma an\u00e1lise adicional mostrou que o ataque foi implementado em n\u00edvel de infraestrutura provedor de hospedagem<\/a>, o que permitiu que os malfeitores interceptassem e redirecionassem o tr\u00e1fego destinado ao dom\u00ednio notepad-plus-plus.org. O redirecionamento foi realizado de forma seletiva apenas para determinados usu\u00e1rios, que recebiam um manifesto alterado com informa\u00e7\u00f5es sobre atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es. Os primeiros ind\u00edcios da atividade dos atacantes datam de junho de 2025, e os \u00faltimos \u2014 de 10 de novembro, mas a possibilidade de ataque permaneceu at\u00e9 2 de dezembro. <\/p>\n

De acordo com as informa\u00e7\u00f5es fornecidas pelo provedor, o ataque foi poss\u00edvel devido ao comprometimento do servidor de hospedagem compartilhada onde o site notepad-plus-plus.org estava hospedado. Em 2 de setembro, ap\u00f3s a atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o do software, a falha foi corrigida, mas os atacantes haviam obtido anteriormente credenciais para acessar um dos servi\u00e7os internos, o que lhes permitia at\u00e9 2 de dezembro redirecionar solicita\u00e7\u00f5es para o script \u00abhttps:\/\/notepad-plus-plus.org\/getDownloadUrl.php\u00bb. servidores<\/a>. Em 2 de dezembro, a falsifica\u00e7\u00e3o das atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es foi detectada e o provedor bloqueou o acesso dos atacantes. Ap\u00f3s o incidente, o site do Notepad++ foi transferido para outro provedor de hospedagem, mais atento \u00e0 seguran\u00e7a. <\/p>\n

Na vers\u00e3o 8.8.9 do Notepad++, foram adicionadas verifica\u00e7\u00f5es obrigat\u00f3rias n\u00e3o apenas para assinaturas digitais, mas tamb\u00e9m para certificados dos arquivos a serem baixados, a fim de bloquear a substitui\u00e7\u00e3o de atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es, tanto no Notepad++ quanto no WinGUp. Na aguardada vers\u00e3o 8.9.2, que ser\u00e1 lan\u00e7ada em um m\u00eas, ser\u00e1 adicionada a verifica\u00e7\u00e3o de assinatura digital para o manifesto XML (XMLDSig) retornado pelo servidor de entrega de atualiza\u00e7\u00f5es.
