Durante o desenvolvimento, parte do c\u00f3digo foi emprestada da biblioteca <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceware.org\/newlib\/\">newlib<\/a><\/noindex> do projeto Cygwin e <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nongnu.org\/avr-libc\/\">AVR Libc<\/a><\/noindex>, desenvolvida para microcontroladores Atmel AVR. O c\u00f3digo do PicoLibc <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/keith-packard\/picolibc\">\u00e9 distribu\u00eddo<\/a><\/noindex> est\u00e1 sob a licen\u00e7a BSD. O suporte para a constru\u00e7\u00e3o da biblioteca \u00e9 oferecido para arquiteturas ARM (32 bits), i386, RISC-V, x86_64 e PowerPC.<\/p>\n<p>Originalmente, o projeto foi desenvolvido sob o nome \u2018newlib-nano\u2019 e teve como objetivo reformular algumas fun\u00e7\u00f5es intensivas em recursos do Newlib, que eram problem\u00e1ticas de usar em dispositivos embarcados com pouca RAM. Por exemplo, as fun\u00e7\u00f5es stdio foram substitu\u00eddas por uma vers\u00e3o compacta da biblioteca avrlibc. O c\u00f3digo tamb\u00e9m foi limpo de componentes n\u00e3o utilizados na compila\u00e7\u00e3o para dispositivos embarcados que n\u00e3o eram fornecidos sob a licen\u00e7a BSD. Uma vers\u00e3o simplificada do c\u00f3digo de inicializa\u00e7\u00e3o (crt0) foi adicionada, e a implementa\u00e7\u00e3o de fluxos locais foi convertida de \u2018struct _reent\u2019 para um mecanismo TLS.<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thread-local_storage\">armazenamento local de thread<\/a><\/noindex>).
