Joshua Strobl, principal developer of the Budgie project, has published a proposal to start creating official Spin builds of Fedora Linux with the Budgie desktop environment. A new group called Budgie SIG has been established to maintain Budgie packages and create these new builds. The Fedora Spin edition with Budgie is planned for release starting with Fedora Linux 38. The proposal has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical side of Fedora distribution development.
Initially, the Budgie environment was focused on use within the Solus distribution, but it later evolved into an independent project that also began to distribute packages for Arch Linux and Ubuntu. The Ubuntu Budgie edition received official status in 2016, but in Fedora, Budgie did not receive proper attention, with official packages only starting to be provided from the release of Fedora 37. Budgie is based on GNOME technologies and its own implementation of the GNOME Shell. In the next version, Budgie 11, they plan to separate the desktop functionality from the layer that handles visualization and information output, allowing for detachment from specific graphical toolkits and libraries, and implementing full support for the Wayland protocol.
For window management in Budgie, the Budgie Window Manager (BWM) is employed, which is an enhanced modification of the basic Mutter plugin. At the core of Budgie is a panel that is organized similarly to traditional desktop panels. All panel elements are applets, allowing for flexible customization of their composition, repositioning, and substitution of implementations of core panel elements to personal preference. Among the available applets are a classic application menu, a task switching system, an area with a list of open windows, and view options. birouri virtuale, indicatorul de gestionare a energiei, aplicația de control al volumului, indicatorul stării sistemului și ceasul.
