Joshua Strobl, principal developer of the Budgie project, published a proposal to include the officially released Fedora Onyx, an atomically updated variant of Fedora Linux featuring the Budgie desktop environment, complementing the classic Fedora Budgie Spin and resembling the Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Sericea, and Fedora Kinoite editions, which come with GNOME, Sway, and KDE. The Fedora Onyx edition is proposed to be delivered starting with the Fedora Linux 39 release, but the proposal has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), responsible for the technical part of the Fedora distribution development.
Fedora Onyx is based on the technologies of Fedora Silverblue and is also provided in the form of a monolithic image, not divided into separate packages and updated atomically through complete replacement. The base environment is built from official Fedora RPM packages using the rpm-ostree toolkit and is mounted in read-only mode. For the installation and updating of additional applications, a self-sufficient flatpak package system is used, allowing applications to be separated from the main system and run in a separate container.
