Jens Axboe, creator of io_uring and maintainer of the block subsystem in the Linux kernel, managed to increase the number of input/output operations per second (IOPS) by at least 6% (possibly more on fully-equipped Linux kernel configurations), spending just 5 minutes on coding. The idea is to cache the current time request in the block subsystem, made with each input/output operation, as there is nothing in the block system that requires nanosecond precision time. As Axboe writes, he most regrets not doing this 5 years ago when the idea first came to him—because, as it turned out, the implementation took only 5 minutes.
