Joshua Strobl, principal developer of the Budgie desktop, announced his departure from the governing council (Core Team) of the Solus project and his resignation as the leader responsible for developer relations and user interface development (Experience Lead). Beatrice Meyers, who is in charge of the technical side of Solus, assured that the distribution's development will continue and that an announcement regarding the change in project structure and team restructuring will be made soon.
In turn, Joshua Strobl explained that he intends to join the development of the new distribution SerpentOS, to which the original creator of the Solus project has also shifted focus. Thus, the old Solus team will unite around the SerpentOS project. Joshua also does not rule out plans to port the Budgie desktop environment from GTK to EFL libraries and intends to dedicate more time to the development of Budgie. Moreover, he plans to create a separate organization to oversee the development of the Budgie desktop environment and involve community members interested in Budgie, such as the Ubuntu Budgie and Endeavour OS distributions.
As a reason for his departure, Joshua cites a conflict that arose over attempts to voice and resolve issues hindering progress in Solus, both from direct project participants and from interested community members. Joshua does not disclose the details of the conflict to avoid airing grievances. It is only mentioned that all his attempts to change the situation and improve collaboration with the community were rejected, and none of the issues raised were resolved.
It is worth noting that the Solus Linux distribution is not based on packages from other distributions and follows a hybrid development model, under which significant releases are periodically made that offer new technologies and substantial improvements, while between major releases the distribution develops using a rolling package update model. The package manager eopkg (a fork of PiSi from Pardus Linux) is used for package management.
Desktopul Budgie se bazează pe tehnologiile GNOME, dar utilizează propriile implementări ale shell-ului GNOME, panoului, appletelor și sistemului de notificări. Pentru gestionarea ferestrelor, Budgie folosește managerul de feronțe Budgie Window Manager (BWM), care este o modificare extinsă a plugin-ului de bază Mutter.
