Mark Surman, director of the Mozilla Foundation, announced the creation of the venture fund Mozilla Ventures, which will invest in startups that promote products and technologies aligned with Mozilla's ideals and manifesto. The fund will start operating in the first half of 2023, with an initial investment size of at least 35 million dollars.
The values that startup teams should share include privacy, inclusivity, transparency, accessibility for people with disabilities, and respect for human dignity. Examples of startups that meet these requirements include Secure AI Labs (a unified patient registry for facilitating medical research), Block Party (a blocker for unwanted commenters on Twitter), and heylogin (a password manager that uses phone confirmation instead of a master password).
Principles reflected in the manifesto:
The internet is an integral part of modern life, a key component in education, communication, collaboration, business, entertainment, and the structure of society as a whole. The internet is a global public resource that must remain open and accessible. The internet should enrich the lives of every individual. The security and privacy of internet users are fundamental and should not be treated as secondary issues. People should have the ability to shape the internet and their presence within it. The effectiveness of the internet as a public resource depends on compatibility (protocols, data formats, content), innovation, and the decentralization of internet development efforts worldwide. Open-source software contributes to the development of the internet as a public resource. Transparent public processes foster cooperation, enhance accountability, and build trust. Commercial participation in the development of the internet brings significant benefits; however, it is important to maintain a balance between commercial profit and public benefit. Increasing the public benefit of the internet is an important task worthy of time and attention.
